(Taijing Wu\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While China and the U.S. have indicated a desire to curtail the raw animosity of the Trump years, both the Democratic and Republican parties maintain strong support for Taiwan and a tough approach toward China over trade, human rights and its increasingly assertive military and foreign policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tsai\u2019s remarks came as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/07\/17\/nimitz-reagan-carrier-strike-groups-pick-up-dual-carrier-exercises-in-south-china-sea-again\/\" target=_blank>the U.S. Pacific Fleet<\/a> conducted exercises in the South China Sea combining ships and planes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/02\/09\/roosevelt-nimitz-carrier-strike-groups-conduct-dual-carrier-operations-in-south-china-sea\/\" target=_blank>the aircraft carriers Theodore Roosevelt and Nimitz<\/a>. The exercises Tuesday were aimed at \u201cincreasing interoperability between assests as well as command and control capabilities,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/06\/29\/two-carrier-strike-groups-operating-together-in-7th-fleet-waters\/\" target=_blank>the U.S. 7th Fleet <\/a>said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe ships and aircraft of the two strike groups coordinated operations in a highly trafficked area to demonstrate the U.S. Navy\u2019s ability to operate in challenging environments.\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/02\/09\/roosevelt-nimitz-carrier-strike-groups-conduct-dual-carrier-operations-in-south-china-sea\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Roosevelt, Nimitz carrier strike groups conduct dual carrier operations in South China Sea<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In June 2020, the carrier strike groups also operated together in the Philippine Sea for integrated exercises.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the U.S. exercises were not conducive to regional peace and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina will continue to take necessary measures to firmly defend its national sovereignty and security and work with regional countries to firmly maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China claims ownership over virtually the entire South China Sea and has built military installations on reefs and atolls by covering them with sand and concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwan holds Taiping Island in the highly contested Spratly group, joining Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam in actively challenging China\u2019s ambition to exert control over the area, through which an estimated $5 trillion in international trade travels annually.
