The suspension ended at the start of January, but department officials in recent weeks had received pressure from lawmakers and outside advocates to continue to show leniency in light of the ongoing pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/09\/new-va-secretary-promises-unity-around-work-to-reform-veterans-programs\/\" target=_blank>VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> said the latest move is designed to ensure that veterans facing financial stress don\u2019t have problems compounded by VA debt collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2021\/02\/09\/new-va-secretary-promises-unity-around-work-to-reform-veterans-programs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21040653160202.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New VA secretary promises unity around work to reform veterans programs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Denis McDonough was sworn in as the new VA Secretary on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy top priority right now is to do everything in our power to help our veterans, caregivers and their families get through this challenging COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cVA will continue to find ways to provide real relief to 2 million veterans [with current debts] and their families as we fight through this health crisis together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, VA officials extended a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures until the end of June, the fifth time that deadline has been pushed back. That applies to all properties backed by VA-guaranteed loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans who owe other debts will be contacted by VA officials in coming weeks to discuss \u201cavailable expansive relief options\u201d for the money owed. In addition to the delay in collections, veterans may be eligible for extended repayment plans, debt waivers, and hardship suspensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuals who wish to pay back their debts before September are still permitted to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/17\/more-than-10000-va-patients-have-died-from-coronavirus\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More than 10,000 VA patients have died from coronavirus<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department has averaged almost 30 deaths a day connected to the virus one the last 11 months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families with questions can also contact the VA Debt Management Center at 800-827-0648.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 10,000 patients connected to the department have died from coronavirus-related complications in the
