DoD researching marijuana investment policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As long as you don\u2019t smoke it, can you invest in marijuana companies and maintain a security clearance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon is looking more closely at the issue now as more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2016\/09\/23\/army-pot-fairs-off-limits-to-alaska-based-soldiers\/\" target=_blank>military personnel raise questions<\/a> on the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Facebook group \u201cAir Force Forum\u201d published emails in the last few weeks showing that personnel with marijuana companies in their investment portfolios faced the risk of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AirForceForum\/photos\/a.201001016740213\/1190559877784317\/?type=3&#038;theater\" target=_blank> losing their security clearances<\/a>, DoD has faced questions over its approach. More states are passing laws legalizing pot, and investors find the marijuana business irresistible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But under federal law, marijuana is still an illegal substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/08\/29\/as-the-army-modernizes-its-standards-to-join-legal-marijuana-use-is-still-an-open-question\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18001620603539.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">As the Army modernizes its standards to join, legal marijuana use is still an open question<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is continuing to consider changes to enlistment standards for past misconduct, including marijuana use.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, DoD has deferred to looking at the \u201cwhole person concept\u201d when weighing an individual\u2019s trustworthiness to hold a clearance. Under those guidelines, owning a pot farm may be an issue, while learning that your managed mutual fund invests in gummies may not. But those lines aren\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile, currently, no official DOD guidance specific to financial involvement in marijuana exists, the Department continues to research the topic. Any changes will be addressed through normal policy update procedures,\u201d DoD spokeswoman Army Lt. Col. Audricia M. Harris said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2015\/01\/27\/letter-pot-shops-off-limits-to-military-members-in-washington-state\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635579817128119473-451852800jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Letter: Pot shops off limits to military members in Washington state<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Dozens of recreational marijuana businesses in Washington state have received letters from the military telling them that their shops are off limits to all members of the armed forces.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lack of specific guidance may soon change as DoD\u2019s Standards of Conduct Office (SOCO) weighs in, according to an email published today by Air Force Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSOCO hopes to put out guidance soon,\u201d Shannon McGuire, counsel for the Air Force Ethics Office wrote in a March 6 email <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AirForceForum\/photos\/pcb.1194127390760899\/1194127327427572\/?type=3&#038;theater\" target=_blank>obtained by the the Forum<\/a>. \u201cSo please continue to stand by. I know there are a lot of emails floating around on this issue.
