But veterans seeking mental care at outpatient clinics can face copayments for appointments, typically ranging from $15 to $50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates say even those small amounts can present a potential barrier to a veteran in distress who needs immediate assistance. And the costs can compound quickly in cases where veterans need multiple visits in a month, often to refill medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the new move \u201cwould reduce the financial burden of multiple co-payments associated with both increased outpatient visits as well as more frequent, but limited supply of prescribed medications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, VA officials announced that veterans suicides across America in 2019 fell to about 17 per day, their lowest level in 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/05\/21\/suicide-risk-for-veterans-could-grow-as-coronavirus-crisis-winds-down\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6148209.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Suicide risk for veterans could grow as coronavirus crisis winds down<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Mental health experts warn that feelings of depression and anxiety will likely outlast the immediate isolation of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest data available does not take into account the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which began in March 2020, but VA officials preliminary research has not shown a significant increase in those numbers over the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, suicide prevention remains a key focus of VA leadership and the White House, as it has been for the last three presidential administrations. Even with the decrease, the rate of suicide among veterans remains almost double the rest of the American public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the public can comment on the planned copayment rule through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/document\/VA-2022-VHA-0003-0001\" target=\"_blank\">the Federal Register<\/a> until March 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer. Veterans, troops or their family members can also text 838255 or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/a> for
