As of Friday afternoon, they had provided items to around 12,000 troops, but that increased Friday night when they saw such a surge that the team was on the ground until 2 a.m., Sweeney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the military is providing lodging for the troops deployed to the Capitol, the not-for-profit USO is providing some extra comforts \u2014 and they are much appreciated by the troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone is stopping by the table and thanking the staff. They have expressed that they are grateful that every time they deploy we are alongside them,\u201d said Angela Hodge, USO mobile operations and programs manager, in an email provided to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is such a warm welcome when we see the USO pull up. You always bring something good and lift our spirits,\u201d a service member told John Brunson, USO mobile maintenance coordinator, according to the email. Another service member, a lieutenant colonel, told him, \u201chow much it meant to him and his troops that we were on site. He said us being there really make a positive difference on morale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2021\/01\/15\/dc-pizza-shop-is-helping-feed-the-national-guard\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-01-15-at-2.20.59-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DC pizza shop is helping feed the National Guard<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The National Guard can&#039;t accept cots, but the can take pizza.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three different mobile units \u2014 two from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uso.org\/\" target=_blank>USO headquarters<\/a>, and one from <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.uso.org\/\" target=_blank>USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore<\/a> \u2014 began arriving to the sites on Jan. 9, said Courtney Sweeney, USO\u2019s director for the mobile centers. Among the team members on the ground are a Navy spouse, and two retired Army command sergeants major, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re lucky to have a great relationship with the National Guard\u2026 It\u2019s really allowed us to get in very early to make sure we are where we need to be for our service members,\u201d Sweeney said. The USO is working closely with the National Guard Bureau to ensure that they\u2019re providing items the troops want. Everything is grab \u2018n go, COVID-friendly snacks, leaning heavily on prepackaged multipacks of various items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coffee, energy drinks and electrolytes have been flying off the tables in particular, Sweeney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re looking at providing some more robust grab-and-go items such as breakfast options, and sandwiches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hygiene items include small deodorants, razors, toothbrush and toothpaste. Snack packs include items like applesauce, granola bars and other packaged items they get put in their pockets, Sweeney said. The items provided to the troops are a mix of products donated by USO\u2019s corporate partners, as well as USO purchases at bulk supply stores to fill in the gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike other mobile USO operations for troops in areas hit by disasters such as hurricanes, there isn\u2019t a great need for bottled water, as they\u2019re being well supplied. \u201cIt\u2019s more of those \u2018nice-to-haves\u2019 that they\u2019re really appreciating,\u201d Sweeney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USO has been working with their corporate partners to get a variety of items, and they\u2019ve prepositioned stock in different locations in preparation for anticipated difficulty because of restricted movement in Washington. USO officials said there has been \u201can outpouring of interest from our current partners and we are thankful for their generosity and thoughtfulness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first days of the deployment, the general public saw pictures in the media of Guard troops sleeping on the floor of the Capitol, and being handed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2021\/01\/15\/dc-pizza-shop-is-helping-feed-the-national-guard\/\" target=_blank>pizzas<\/a> by members of Congress. People were concerned about the living arrangements, and at first were flooding Guard offices with offers of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we appreciate the many offers and people who care about our soldiers and airmen, we are not logistically able to accept donations of any kind,\u201d National Guard Bureau officials said in a press release Jan. 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also made the sleeping arrangements clear. \u201cIn addition, please know our National Guardsmen have appropriate lodging for when they are off-duty; the photos circulating are of them on-duty, in a designated rest area between shifts,\u201d officials stated. \u201cBeing present is the first step in ensuring the safety of our citizens and our nation\u2019s Capitol. Our security personnel work in shifts and rest when they can as others stand watch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Troops are provided lodging in nearby hotels for their off-duty hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2021\/01\/16\/national-guard-cots-capitol-1526359\" target=_blank>Politico has reported<\/a> that in response to lawmakers\u2019 concerns about troops sleeping on the marble floors of the Capitol during their rest breaks, the military will be supplying cots for those areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweeney said her mobile unit team considers themselves the lucky ones. \u201cWe\u2019re the tip of the spear for the USO. We\u2019re 100 percent mission delivery to the field,\u201d she said. Her team gets energized, \u201cnot because of what\u2019s happening, of course, but because they get to go in and support the service members where we\u2019re needed most\u2026. My team thrives on that.\u201d She said she has had many USO staff members volunteer to help the team, so she already has backups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The USO is
