{"id":58665,"date":"2022-06-11T18:26:49","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T18:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/11\/ukraine-uk-mans-family-devastated-by-death-sentence\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:07:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T11:07:59","slug":"ukraine-uk-mans-family-devastated-by-death-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/2022\/06\/11\/ukraine-uk-mans-family-devastated-by-death-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine: UK man\u2019s family \u2018devastated\u2019 by death sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LONDON \u2014 The family of a British man condemned to death for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/03\/14\/us-veterans-head-to-ukraine-to-fight-but-zelenskyys-legion-faces-hurdles\/\" target=\"_blank\">fighting for Ukraine<\/a> said it is devastated by the outcome of what it termed a \u201cshow trial\u201d and called Saturday for him to be released and accorded the treatment an international human rights convention guarantees prisoners of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A court in the separatist-proclaimed Donetsk People\u2019s Republic of Ukraine convicted two British fighters and one Moroccan Thursday of seeking the violent overthrow of power, an offense punishable by death in the eastern territory controlled by Moscow-backed rebels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The men were also convicted of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/02\/27\/want-to-go-fight-for-ukraine-heres-what-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\">mercenary activities<\/a> and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur whole <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/05\/01\/combat-death-puts-spotlight-on-americans-fighting-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">family is devastated<\/a> and saddened at the outcome of the illegal show trial,\u201d the family of one of the British men, Shaun Pinner, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A statement issued by Britain\u2019s Foreign Office on behalf of Pinner\u2019s family said the 48-year-old had been a resident of Ukraine for four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe sincerely hope that all parties will cooperate urgently to ensure the safe release or exchange of Shaun. (AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family also described Pinner as a proud \u201ccontracted serving marine in the 36th Brigade,\u201d a Ukrainian naval infantry division that helped defend the besieged southern port city of Mariupol before it was captured by Russian forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a member of the brigade, Pinner \u201cshould be accorded all the rights of a prisoner of war according to the Geneva Convention and including full independent legal representation,\u201d the family said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine and the West have denounced the proceedings in the unrecognized Donetsk republic as a sham and a violation of the rules of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pro-Russia separatists said Saturday they were preparing to also try a South Korean citizen who had fought on the side of Ukraine, but that the man had escaped.
