We wear short shorts.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1958, a band called the Royal Teens released a song called \u201cShort Shorts.\u201d And while the lyrics were at that time geared towards women in tiny jean cut-offs, it may as well be the anthem of the United States Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the 1970s, Marines have donned uncomfortably short shorts during their workout regimens. Known then as \u201cRanger Panties,\u201d these incredibly small drawers were first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theauthenticgay.com\/ranger-panties\/\" target=\"_blank\">issued<\/a> to the U.S. Army Rangers as part of the PT uniform, hence the adorable moniker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRanger Panties are silky smooth,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/author\/ace\">Adam Clark Estes<\/a>, who reviewed them for Gizmodo. \u201cThe nylon tricot fabric is slightly stretchy and literally as soft as silk. Unlike real silk, the lightweight fabric is extremely breathable. The shorts are also extremely short with just a 2-inch inseam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As time wore on and the tiny trousers proliferated, they became known as \u201csilkies,\u201d for their satin-smooth sheen and quick-dry nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of 2011, however, silkies have been banned for wear during physical training. While there was a spark of hope for an illustrious return as the Corps tested new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/2572105\/marine-corps-to-begin-trial-run-for-new-physical-training-uniform\/\" target=\"_blank\">Physical Training Uniform<\/a> options in April 2021, it doesn\u2019t seem likely that Ranger Panties will ever again be standard issue. Though they may make for excellent workout gear, they don\u2019t exactly leave a lot to the imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014, Sgt. Maj. David Stocks with Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton said that while he appreciates the shorts, he doesn\u2019t believe that they should be worn in public, particularly because Marines wear them a size too small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith current social norms, I don\u2019t see silkies as appropriate to wear,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2014\/08\/18\/marines-call-on-cmc-to-bring-back-silkies-and-tattoos\/#:~:text=Just%20about%20every%20Marine%20says,flow%20and%20accentuate%20their%20physique.\" target=\"_blank\">he said in a survey<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s unflattering or unsightly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some Marines report wearing them to PT regardless of regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve never bothered with if it was an order and just wear them anyways,\u201d wrote Reddit user <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/USMC\/comments\/ajm1pm\/silkies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Snarky_Answer<\/a>. \u201cI haven\u2019t had any issues other than the CO and 1st Sgt. laughing about them while I was doing pull ups on the PFT. Then they gave me extra pull ups [because] they said them making me laugh cost me pull ups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As former Marine Ruddy Cano points out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearethemighty.com\/articles\/ranger-panties-silkies\/\" target=\"_blank\">there is a loophole<\/a> in the regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/portals\/1\/Publications\/MCO%201020.34H%20v2.pdf?ver=2018-06-26-094038-137\" target=\"_blank\">MCO 1020.34H, 3023 1 b<\/a>. states that \u201colive green trunks of any material, similar in design to the current standard issue general purpose trunks, may be worn at the option of the individual on all occasions for which the PT uniform is authorized\/prescribed. Optional trunks may be purchased through Marine Corps Exchanges or commercial sources and are not required to contain Marine Corps approval identification. For comfort and\/or modesty, Marines are authorized to wear tights under the general purpose trunks that are not longer than, and the same color as the general purpose trunks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So technically it\u2019s possible to get away with wearing them, though it may be discouraged by an individual command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first loophole is that during individual PT one can wear whatever one wants,\u201d Cano added. \u201cThe second loophole is if the leader of the formation decides the uniform of the day is silkies, everyone must wear it. The third and final loophole is there is no MARADMIN specifically forbidding them. There is no written rule anywhere that states you can\u2019t other than MCO 1020.34H, which is vague at best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for those that are not brave enough to risk breaking the rules, there are alternative options for off-hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soffe, the company famous for making the gym shorts millennial girls rolled to uncomfortable heights during middle school P.E. classes, also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soffe.com\/Collections\/Military\/?utm_source=google&#038;utm_id=go_cmp-1705641980_adg-72251472448_ad-331362928035_kwd-635568029490_dev-c_ext-_prd-&#038;gclid=Cj0KCQjwmuiTBhDoARIsAPiv6L9mZCh4FugMUgb9Du2uLnLI-gCDx6GJF8fSHM0vM-kIwNgfTeu71fQaAi6ZEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\">military apparel collection<\/a>. In it, there are classic silkies for just $14.99. And if you\u2019re feeling fancy, you can upgrade to special print silkies for just $10 more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/sempersilkies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Semper Silkies<\/a>, which is a veteran-owned company that sells the caboose-cradlers with patterns featuring everything from Hawaiian print to a bootylicious bald
