But policy changes implemented by former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, and a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/12\/11\/court-refuses-trump-request-to-delay-jan-1-transgender-enlistments\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">court cases<\/a>, opened a path for them to enlist, beginning Jan. 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently serving transgender recruits and those seeking to join the military may still be impacted by final guidance that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis sent to the White House last week. Trump has sought to end transgender military service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump is expected to make his final decision on Mattis\u2019 recommendations by March 23.
