{"id":61371,"date":"2021-11-05T16:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T16:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/11\/05\/va-officials-concede-that-trumps-mar-a-lago-three-had-unusual-improper-access-on-vets-policy-issues\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:29:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T11:29:25","slug":"va-officials-concede-that-trumps-mar-a-lago-three-had-unusual-improper-access-on-vets-policy-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2021\/11\/05\/va-officials-concede-that-trumps-mar-a-lago-three-had-unusual-improper-access-on-vets-policy-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s \u2018Mar-a-Lago Three\u2019 had unusual, improper access on vets policy issues, VA now says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials on Friday conceded that a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/27\/trumps-unofficial-advisors-on-va-had-significant-access-influence-over-policy-report\/\" target=\"_blank\"> trio of executives<\/a> with personal ties to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/08\/10\/concerns-build-over-trumps-unofficial-advisors-on-veterans-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> had \u201cunusually pervasive access\u201d to senior VA leaders during his administration, an arrangement that prompted a lawsuit against the department accusing them of violating federal transparency rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department did not admit to any legal wrongdoing, but did note that \u201ceven the appearance of these individuals\u2019 access to the VA during the previous administration may have been concerning to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move follows findings by congressional investigators earlier this fall and widespread news reports that criticized the three men\u2019s influence over VA policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The men involved \u2014 Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, primary care specialist Dr. Bruce Moskowitz, and attorney Marc Sherman \u2014 were asked by Trump in 2017 to act as unofficial advisors on veterans issues. All three were dues-paying members of Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2018\/10\/09\/va-wont-turn-over-documents-related-to-outside-businessmens-influence-on-department-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">White House officials<\/a> insisted that the arrangement was simply an opportunity for the president to hear outside views on the sprawling veterans bureaucracy. But a ProPublica investigation into the group in 2018 found the trio had significant access to and influence over VA officials, without any official public oversight role.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/27\/trumps-unofficial-advisors-on-va-had-significant-access-influence-over-policy-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_373872501526.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump\u2019s unofficial advisors on VA had significant access, influence over policy: report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Newly released emails show a larger role for the men than previously reported.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, a report from the House Oversight Committee echoed those findings, saying that the men \u201cviolated the law and sought to exert improper influence over government officials to further their own personal interests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter this week responding to a pending lawsuit from VoteVets and Democracy Forward about the advisory arrangement, department officials stated that the men \u201chad what appears to be unusually pervasive access to certain senior political officials in the department, and these private citizens apparently sought to exert influence with respect to certain government initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even before taking office, members of President Joe Biden\u2019s campaign had criticized Trump\u2019s handling of department operations and policy work. Friday\u2019s concession appears to be another extension of that stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the public acknowledgment from department leadership, officials from VoteVets \u2014 which has close ties to Democratic Party officials \u2014 agreed to end the ongoing lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Mar-a-Lago Council was a poster child for the kind of pervasive corruption throughout the Trump administration, and had we not stepped in, the undue influence of Donald Trump\u2019s clubhouse friends could have hurt our veterans in a lot of ways,\u201d said Jon Soltz, and chairman of VoteVets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also have sent the message that no future administration should try this again. policy decisions on VA medical records issues and discussed ways to potentially monetize VA patient health data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with emails to senior VA staff, the trio also frequently contacted senior White House staff on VA policy issues and briefed the president on their proposals, all without any official federal role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
