Mike Bost, R-Ill.,<\/a> ranking member of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee. \u201cCongress must always prioritize veterans. But there is a natural limit to how big any budget can be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their recently released budget for fiscal 2022, White House officials asked for a 10 percent increase in VA spending next year. The proposed VA fiscal plus-up comes alongside funding boosts for numerous U.S. departments, but most of them saw flat growth or cuts during the previous presidential administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/05\/28\/va-budget-plan-includes-new-office-focused-on-preventing-harassment-promoting-diversity\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21063676405162.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA budget plan includes new office focused on preventing harassment, promoting diversity<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The nearly $270 billion spending plan represents another planned increase for veterans program funds.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If approved, it would be the largest total for the department in history, up almost 53 percent in the last five years alone. In 2001, the entire VA budget amounted to about $45 billion, about six times smaller than the 2022 request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $270 billion total includes just the base budget, covering issues like mandatory benefits payouts and VA health care operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of that, administration officials are pushing for another $18 billion in spending on hospital upgrades as part of a sweeping $2 trillion infrastructure plan. Another $17 billion was approved earlier this year for VA programs and costs related to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And during testimony before the committee, VA Secretary Denis McDonough said that a collection of toxic exposure bills pending before Congress could add tens of billions more in spending in coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All together, the plans could push total department spending well above $300 billion, even as the number of veterans in America has steadily declined over the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe budget is up 10 percent, but the problem is the number of veterans using the VA services is not up by 10 percent,\u201d Bost said. \u201cVA forecasts the number of veterans enrolled in the VA will actually go down [in coming years]. I\u2019m not suggesting cutting VA, but the budget growth has to be more in line with demand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough defended the spending, saying the money \u201callows us to deliver high-quality health care and benefits to our veterans at a time when they need it most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spending on caregiver benefits (expanded by Congress two years ago) will add $350 million more in spending this year. Funding for homeless veterans outreach will be up $185 million. Money for expanded services for women veterans, medical staff increases and facility improvements account for billions more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough noted that the toxic exposures issues \u2014 particularly plans to add hypertension to the list of illnesses presumed linked to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam \u2014 will represent \u201ca significant budget outlay\u201d for the department if approved. The new fiscal year begins on Oct. 1, but Congress has missed that deadline on multiple occasions in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the high price tag, the VA budget is not expected to be a contentious issue among lawmakers.
