{"id":65280,"date":"2018-09-12T14:24:29","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T14:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/09\/12\/va-establishes-new-research-center-focused-on-caregivers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:43:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:43:55","slug":"va-establishes-new-research-center-focused-on-caregivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2018\/09\/12\/va-establishes-new-research-center-focused-on-caregivers\/","title":{"rendered":"VA establishes new research center focused on caregivers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Veterans Affairs officials are launching a new center of excellence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/02\/06\/va-sees-big-savings-in-expanding-caregiver-stipends-but-lawmakers-still-worry-about-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\">focused on caregivers<\/a>, a move that advocates say could significantly boost research and support for families caring for ailing veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know how important caregivers are to the veterans community now, and we know they\u2019re going to be even more important 10 and 20 years out,\u201d said Steve Schwab, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/11\/13\/advocates-for-military-caregivers-shift-focus-from-awareness-to-action\/\" target=_blank>Elizabeth Dole Foundation<\/a>. \u201cThis center is going to own the research in this area and a lot of areas that are still undiscovered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The center consists of teams of researchers spread across four VA sites in Texas, Florida, Utah and California. Together, the staffers will collect data on caregiver challenges,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/23\/massive-veterans-policy-bill-heads-to-trumps-desk-but-results-will-take-time\/\" target=_blank> support service availability<\/a> and a host of other topics with an eye towards future policy changes designed to improve veterans health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/07\/26\/heres-why-more-veterans-caregivers-may-get-commissary-exchange-privileges-by-2020\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIL-COMMISSARY-web-file.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here\u2019s why more veterans, caregivers may get commissary, exchange privileges by 2020<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The proposal, part of the annual defense authorization bill, is en route to the Senate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier studies by the RAND Corporation have identified more than 5.5 million veteran caregivers across the United States, providing medical and emotional support that would total nearly $14 billion annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials do grant monthly stipends and training services to some of those family members, but advocates have said those benefits are greatly overshadowed by the value the caregivers provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schwab said even though groups like his have helped provide significant research on the topic, having federal backing \u2014 and focus \u2014 on the topic provides more opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor example, when we worked with RAND, we identified 10 areas that need further investigation to understand what the community needs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, there\u2019s no evidence-based research on the effects of caregiving on children. Many of these kids end up working as secondary caregivers. What does that mean for them and for the family? That\u2019s the kind of study we need to see get done now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RAND study also estimated that 1.1 million individuals are caring for post\u20139\/11 veterans, a population with different injuries and life expectancy than older generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials officially named the center after former Sen.
