But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/12\/21\/news-of-marine-veterans-death-brings-closure-to-familys-6-year-search\/\" target=_blank>before she had the chance<\/a>, she saw a Facebook post from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/24\/marine-corporal-saves-civilian-couple-kayaking-in-treacherous-waters-off-california-coast\/\" target=_blank>one of her friends<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cO positive kidney donor needed,\u201d the post relayed. Landry, who has Type O-positive blood, decided she might as well try to see if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/27\/marine-awarded-purple-heart-16-years-after-being-wounded-in-fallujah\/\" target=_blank>she was a match<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTen days later, I was a match,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know who I was donating to at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landry has always been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/newsletters\/daily-news-roundup\/2020\/12\/22\/california-marine-saves-18-month-old-child-from-burning-car\/\" target=_blank>someone to help others.<\/a> The 37-year-old Detroit native is a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps. She planned to join the Navy, and had made her way to join just prior to the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/27\/marine-awarded-purple-heart-16-years-after-being-wounded-in-fallujah\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6531639.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine awarded Purple Heart 16 years after being wounded in Fallujah<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Marine was manning his M240 machine gun on top of his AAV when his right forearm was hit with an enemy bullet.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe day I went to the recruitment office, I thought, \u2018Nope. I\u2019m going to be a Marine,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cIt was kind of weird. I don\u2019t know what it was, but I just had a change of heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, she\u2019s stationed at Grissom Air Reserve Base in Indiana. She\u2019ll retire after 20 years in the Marine Corps later this year. She\u2019s ready to move on to something new and plans to take a little time off before starting to work toward her bachelor\u2019s degree in human resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she decided to answer her friend\u2019s post on Facebook in May 2018, she had no idea her organ would be going to a fellow service member. She was donating to her friend\u2019s boyfriend, retired Gunnery Sgt. Charles Dane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surgery was March 31, 2020, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The process took a while to wait for Dane to be healthy enough for surgery, and was delayed further due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pair didn\u2019t even meet face to face until the original date of surgery in January 2020, but that didn\u2019t keep them from connecting when they met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe often kid around,\u201d she said. \u201cI call him a diva. You\u2019ve got a diva kidney now. &#8230; But there\u2019s something different among military. You don\u2019t have to explain yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While people can live normal lives with only one kidney, the surgery is major. In 2018, 6,442 people received a living-donor kidney, according to the National Kidney Foundation, or NKF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rate of recovery and any side effect depend on the patient and type of surgery. Most common side effects include pain and nerve damage at the surgery site, high blood pressure and reduced kidney function later in life, according to the NKF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landry\u2019s kidney removal was a laparoscopic one, so she was able to leave the hospital the day after the surgery. The surgery was supposed to take about four hours, but was completed in two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey say that the surgery is worse for the person who is donating than the person who is receiving, so I experienced a lot more pain than he did,\u201d she said. \u201cSo even though I was discharged the next day, it doesn\u2019t take away from the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not just anyone would be willing to go through surgery for a stranger, and Landry knows that. There are more than 100,000 people on the waiting list for a kidney, according to NKF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve always had that mindset where I love helping people,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I saw this as an opportunity, knowing that I always wanted to donate my bone marrow, (and I) always donated blood, I just kind of jumped at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere was no hesitation. I just went for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landry said the hardest part of the surgery for her was not being able to have visitors. COVID-19 restrictions kept Landry and Dane from having anyone with them in the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot having family or friends there after surgery was probably the biggest blow,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the plan was to fly to Maryland for the surgery, but the pandemic meant she had to make a 13-hour drive by herself. Luckily, she had a friend drive her home three weeks later because she was still in pain and on medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landry\u2019s family and friends weren\u2019t really surprised by her decision, including her 15-year-old son, Vincent \u201cQuad\u201d Landry IV, who wasn\u2019t phased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt first I didn\u2019t tell him because I didn\u2019t know for sure,\u201d she said. \u201cBut when I did, he wasn\u2019t shocked. He has two Marine parents, he\u2019s not easily surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people tell Landry that she\u2019s a good person for what she\u2019s done, she said sometimes she doesn\u2019t know what to say, but it\u2019s been nice to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially during these really difficult times, it is nice,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople say, \u2018The world would be better with more people like you.\u2019 But, I am just a person who wants to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Landry has suffered a lot of loss in her family since she began the donor process. In 2019, she lost her aunt unexpectedly to cancer. In July 2020, she lost another aunt to stage 4 colon cancer. Then, her mother passed away from gallbladder cancer on Nov. 16, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor me, having donated and saved a life and all that, and then not be able to save my own family\u2019s life, it has just opened my eyes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, she\u2019s an advocate for a proactive approach to health. No matter the health issue, Landry wants people to realize how important it is to take health seriously and know family history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s about awareness,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about people just checking their health and being in the know.
