{"id":65731,"date":"2018-12-07T17:09:50","date_gmt":"2018-12-07T17:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/07\/online-va-medical-appointments-expanding-to-walmart-sites-vfw-posts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T13:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:10:13","slug":"online-va-medical-appointments-expanding-to-walmart-sites-vfw-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2018\/12\/07\/online-va-medical-appointments-expanding-to-walmart-sites-vfw-posts\/","title":{"rendered":"Online VA medical appointments expanding to Walmart sites, VFW posts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 In coming months, when veterans are trying to decide whether to go to a Veterans Affairs hospital or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/17\/va-finalizes-contract-to-bring-electronic-health-records-in-line-with-military-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\">a private doctor<\/a> for their check-up, they may opt for a trip to Walmart instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials on Thursday announced a series of new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/military-retirement\/2017\/04\/25\/bills-would-expand-va-telehealth-services-across-state-lines\/\" target=_blank>telehealth partnerships<\/a> designed to dramatically expand their current remote care offerings, to include online exam rooms in Walmarts, American Legion posts and Veterans of Foreign War hangouts centered in rural areas across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, officials from T-Mobile announced they\u2019ll make use of VA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/08\/03\/new-tools-let-vets-schedule-appointments-meet-with-doctors-through-their-phones\/?utm_source=Sailthru&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=EBB%208.4.17&#038;utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief\" target=_blank>video health apps<\/a> free of charge for mobile customers around the country, potentially eliminating a cost barrier to veterans who want to access the department\u2019s telemedicine offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/08\/03\/new-tools-let-vets-schedule-appointments-meet-with-doctors-through-their-phones\/?utm_source=Sailthru&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=EBB%208.4.17&#038;utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Early%20Bird%20Brief\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">New tools let vets schedule appointments, meet with doctors through their phones<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis totally changes the VA\u2019s footprint for delivering care,\u201d said Deborah Scher, executive adviser to the secretary for strategic partnerships at VA. \u201cIt changes (veterans\u2019) ability to access care in a way that can better their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcements came at a telehealth conference here which brought together top veterans policy leaders, technology experts and medical officials to brainstorm ways for the VA to more aggressively pursue remote care initiatives in coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 725,000 veterans took part in some type of remote care appointment in fiscal 2018, either in VA facilities or their own homes. Of that group, 45 percent were located in rural areas where travel to a VA hospital can total more than 100 miles round trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said while those figures point to success with the effort so far, his administration needs to push the idea even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVirtual care is the future of medicine,\u201d he told the conference crowd. \u201cIt is our most powerful emerging tool. Ultimately it will improve and ease access for millions of Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership with Walmart will be a pilot program to put telemedicine stations specifically for veteran customers at stores in rural areas (exact locations have yet to be announced.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients will be able to check in to a private room and video conference with VA medical specials across the country, covering both basic checkups and specialty appointments like dermatology consults or mental health care support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNinety percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart,\u201d Scher said. \u201cNinety percent of veterans don\u2019t live within 10 miles of a VA medical center.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/11\/08\/for-todays-va-its-the-best-of-times-and-the-worst-of-times\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VA-photo-marine.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">For today\u2019s VA, it\u2019s the best of times and the worst of times<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In the last year, the Department of Veterans Affairs has seen big successes and even bigger controversies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars sites will be similar. Philips Healthcare has agreed to supply its telemedicine technology to at least 10 sites that are in similarly remote areas. The first one has already been set up Eureka, Montana, in a VFW post 100 miles from the closest VA hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can get this set up within a couple of days,\u201d said Joe Robinson, senior vice president for Philips\u2019 North America Health Systems. \u201cAnd they can do a heck of a lot with these set-ups. The connection is fast. The camera resolution is high enough to make some diagnoses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson added that placing the mobile medicine sites within the veterans groups\u2019 posts brings another level of familiarity and comfort to many veterans who may not understand all of the new technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have not laid out a timeline for when the pilot programs may expand to more locations. Mike Katz, executive vice president of T-Mobile for business, said the free access to VA telehealth will begin immediately, but officials will work in coming months to make veteran customers aware of the new benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s hopeful that other wireless carriers will follow suit, to expand the availability of the services and to help broaden awareness of veterans\u2019 health options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe need for this is extraordinarily high,\u201d he said. \u201cThe demand is extraordinarily high.
