{"id":65927,"date":"2021-08-18T19:41:59","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T19:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/08\/18\/secva-vaccines-are-the-only-way-to-return-to-normal-life\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:14:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:14:39","slug":"secva-vaccines-are-the-only-way-to-return-to-normal-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2021\/08\/18\/secva-vaccines-are-the-only-way-to-return-to-normal-life\/","title":{"rendered":"SECVA: Vaccines are the only way to \u2018return to normal life\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veteran Affairs Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/08\/senate-confirms-mcdonough-as-next-veterans-affairs-secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Denis McDonough<\/a> on Wednesday reiterated his plea for all veterans and their families to get vaccinated against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/07\/26\/va-health-care-workers-will-be-required-to-get-covid-19-vaccines-to-keep-their-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19<\/a>, saying the protection is \u201cthe only way to end this pandemic and return to normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In remarks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/08\/senate-confirms-mcdonough-as-next-veterans-affairs-secretary\/\" target=\"_blank\">AMVETS<\/a> National Convention in North Carolina \u2014 an annual mass gathering of veterans that was cancelled last year because of pandemic concerns \u2014 McDonough said months of progress in resuming regular operations are being jeopardized by the latest wave of virus cases sweeping the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already lost thousands of veterans to this deadly disease, and now the delta variant is causing an exponential increase in infections, hospitalizations and deaths once again,\u201d he told the assembled crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s why everyone needs to be vaccinated. Ninety-nine percent of those dying from COVID right now are unvaccinated. The department recorded fewer than 300 such deaths in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough\u2019s comments came on the same day White House officials were expected to formally announce plans for booster shots for individuals who previously received coronavirus vaccinations earlier this year and in late 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials in a statement said that VA \u201cwill follow CDC guidance and recommendations regarding a booster shot for all Americans if and when that decision is made,\u201d but provided no further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaccines are free to all veterans, their spouses and caregivers through VA. The department has vaccinated more than 3.2 million veterans in the last eight months and more than 300,000 staffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, McDonough announced plans to require most VA medical employees to be vaccinated to keep their jobs. Contractors and volunteers would also be required to be vaccinated to enter department facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, McDonough reiterated the need for that policy to improve safety for all staff and patients. Our work on telehealth, tele-appeals are allowing us to meet vets where they want, when they want and in unprecedented ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike last summer, when most of the major veterans groups\u2019 conventions were cancelled or shifted to online-only events, many groups are holding the veterans gatherings this year, albeit with extensive safety measures.
