It is a bolt action rifle that can be converted to fire .338 Norma Mag, .300 NM and 7.62 mm calibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/08\/socom-snipers-will-ditch-their-bullets-for-this-new-round-next-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SOF-sniper.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">SOCOM snipers will ditch their bullets for this new round next year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The top Special Operations Forces snipers will replace their 7.62mm sniper rifles with a the 6.5mm Creedmoor, which doubles their hit probability at 1,000m, increases their effective range by nearly half, reduces wind drift by a third and has less recoil.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States Department of Defense announced today that Barrett has been selected to provide their MRAD as the U.S. Special Operations Command Advanced Sniper Rifle system, designated as Mk21,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis marks the first time in history that a father and son have had rifle designs adopted by the US military: Ronnie Barrett with M107 and Chris Barrett with Mk21.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also makes the M107, designated as the M82A3, using the .50 caliber round for busting barriers and penetrating vehicle protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February the Defense Department also announced the purchase of the MRAD in .300 PRC, a different caliber than what was requested for the ASR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year SOCOM officials announced that they would replace their 7.62 mm sniper rifles with the 6.5 mm Creedmoor. That round, according to officials, doubles their hit probability at the 1,000-meter range, increases the effective range by half, reduces wind drift and has less recoil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That rifle is expected to be fielded by 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, SOCOM took eight to 10 shooters from three of the special operations components to fire three sniper platforms over a three-day period, Patrick Fisher, the acquisition program manager for ammunition for Special Operations Command, said at an armaments systems forum last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shooters fired Knight\u2019s Armament\u2019s SR-25, the M110A1 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (based on Heckler &amp; Koch\u2019s G28) and the Mk20 Sniper Support Rifle, made by Fabrique Nationale or FN, in three cartridges \u2014 7.62mm NATO, .260 Remington and 6.5mm Creedmoor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\"
