Pete \u201cMaverick\u201d Mitchell and his nemesis-turned-bestie Iceman (Val Kilmer), but it also instilled new blood in the form a fresh batch of Top Gun aviators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of those new pilots are Lt. Natasha Trace (Monica Barbaro) and her weapon systems officer Lt. Robert Floyd (Lewis Pullman) \u2014 \u201cPhoenix\u201d and \u201cBob,\u201d respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it turns out, the pair love the call signs given to their characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah, I\u2019m hoping to get it on my gravestone,\u201d Pullman joked in an interview with Military Times. \u201cNothing about Lewis or Pullman. I just want Bob.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barbaro noted that someone recently told her the \u201cPhoenix\u201d moniker proves to be a bit of foreshadowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During one of the pilots\u2019 training sessions featured in the movie, Phoenix and Bob hit a few stray birds and nearly go up in smoke before rising from the ashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had never thought of that,\u201d Barbaro said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, Pullman was tight-lipped about whether \u201cBob\u201d has any secret meaning other than being a nickname for Robert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe leave it up for interpretation,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are all sorts of theories. I won\u2019t say which is right and which is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to their call signs, Barbaro and Pullman noted that they truly enjoyed making the film, training with the Navy and interacting with the military community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI met so many people, whether they be military spouses or people within the military themselves, who are just very appreciative of the representation in this film,\u201d Barbaro said. \u201cI think it does look a lot like the military does in terms of diversity and gender.
