Thomas Praxades was working to get Afghan citizens evacuated when he was contacted by Marines on the ground in Kabul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praxades, whose evacuation efforts included numerous interpreters he\u2019d worked with, was informed that the mother of Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Maxton \u201cMax\u201d W. Soviak had made contact with a heartbreaking request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rachel Soviak wanted to find and potentially adopt the little boy featured in one of the last pictures taken of her son before he was killed by a suicide bomber on Aug. 26 along with 12 other U.S. service members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Praxades, sources from 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines \u2014 the outfit Soviak was working with in Afghanistan \u2014 said the child had ended up at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport after his parents had been killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praxades was told the boy had been escorted to the gate by locals before ending up in the care of the 22-year-old corpsman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Troops who knew the young corpsman wanted to help Soviak\u2019s mother, but \u201ctheir hands were tied,\u201d Praxades said, adding \u201cmine weren\u2019t because I was no longer active duty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/09\/13\/a-passion-for-living-navy-corpsman-max-soviak-remembered-during-funeral-services\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AfghanFuneral2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018A passion for living\u2019: Navy Corpsman Max Soviak remembered during funeral services<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cMaxton was MAX in all capital letters, all the time,\u201d Soviak&#039;s sister Kathleen said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praxades reached out to Soviak\u2019s mother on Facebook a few days later and received permission to put the request on social media. The subsequent Sept. 5 Facebook post quickly went viral, being shared over 11,000 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to comments on the post, Soviak\u2019s mother reiterated her support for the efforts to find the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo our knowledge, this picture was taken the morning before our son passed,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWe feel in our hearts that Max was doing what he felt called to do. He was, in that moment, trying to keep these children safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Max-Soviak-Navy_web.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33093\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Max-Soviak-Navy_web.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Max-Soviak-Navy_web.jpg.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Max-Soviak-Navy_web.jpg.jpg?resize=768,402 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Max-Soviak-Navy_web.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,536 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Max Soviak<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf Max was willing to put his life on the line to do what he was called to do, we feel we can continue where he left off and provide [the child] a safe, loving home \u2026 we are prepared to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before long, offers to help began pouring in from around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was crazy,\u201d Praxades said, \u201cIt was a total shot in the dark, we didn\u2019t even have a name, just a picture. \u2026 There were people in Cuba, Norway, Germany and Qatar all offering to help. This was definitely a multinational, multiagency effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe efforts taken to find this kid were amazing,\u201d Praxades said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praxades noted that for the Soviaks, who had 12 children and experience with fostering, there were two best-case outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first, he said, would be to find the boy and bring him safely home to be adopted, the way Max would have wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Rachel Soviak] told me that Max comes from a family that adopts a lot of kids, and that he was always around kids,\u201d Praxedes said. \u201cSo, to her, it was only natural that he wanted to be a corpsman and be working this mission with the young kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second outcome would be the child would be found safely alongside his family and that they might be able to provide support in other ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That result, he said, is exactly what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praxades received confirmation that the child had been found by UNICEF workers within days of posting on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I got the word that the kid was found, I was kind of still questioning it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I had another contact from Department of Homeland Security come out of thin air and work his contacts within the Department of State to help confirm this was the right boy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Praxades\u2019 contacts, the boy had been reunited with a legal guardian in Afghanistan. Still, he remained moved by the Soviak family\u2019s eagerness to help and their strength throughout the ordeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Rachel] told me that she felt called to complete that mission for Max,\u201d Praxades said. \u201cThat\u2019s the word she used. \u2018Called.\u2019 That if Max\u2019s mission was to save these kids, and if this kid had no parents, she felt called to do this, to complete the mission that Max started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey just wanted to do this out of the kindness of their hearts,\u201d Praxedes added. \u201cIt\u2019s inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soviak\u2019s remains were returned to the family on Sept. 8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/09\/13\/a-passion-for-living-navy-corpsman-max-soviak-remembered-during-funeral-services\/\">He was laid to rest Sept. 13<\/a> in Milan, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy posthumously awarded Soviak the Purple Heart and Fleet Marine Force Corpsman warfare
