Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., said last year that the proliferation of small, cheap drones is the \u201cmost concerning tactical development\u201d since the rise of the improvised explosive device in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/02\/08\/drones-are-biggest-tactical-concern-since-ieds-rose-in-iraq-four-star-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CapturedISISDrone.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Drones are biggest tactical concern since the rise of IEDs in Iraq, CENTCOM boss says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Videos from battlefields in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine show the havoc that small drones bring to unsuspecting ground forces.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Army and the Air Force have been working to bolster their counter-SUAS efforts, with the Air Force\u2019s 386th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron developing seminars to provide guidance on how to handle threats from such drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe seminars are a one-on-one opportunity for general leadership to understand what our capabilities are,\u201d Staff Sgt. Daniel Butts, the NCO in charge of counter-SUAS for the 386th ESFS, said in an Air Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/2888232\/security-forces-defend-ali-al-salem-from-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a>. \u201cThese systems provide real time video or a picture and now leadership has a better understanding of what others could use it for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/04\/second-drone-strike-in-two-days-attempted-on-us-led-coalition-in-iraq-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22004323829747.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Second drone strike in two days attempted on U.S.-led coalition in Iraq: report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">No injuries were reported and no group has taken responsibility for the recent attacks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe call it the \u2018kill chain\u2019\u2026.detect, track, identify and defeat,\u201d Butts said. \u201cThe main thing is detecting so we\u2019re able to see it and track it. Once we\u2019re able to track it, we\u2019re going to identify it, which is key to helping us understand if it\u2019s hostile or not and to what extent. Then we can defeat it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The training takes place as U.S. forces in Iraq still face threats from so-called \u201csuicide drones,\u201d according to the U.S.-led coalition there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, two armed drones were shot down as they headed toward a facility housing U.S. advisors at Baghdad airport. Then on Tuesday, two explosives-laden drones targeting an Iraqi military base housing U.S. troops in western Anbar province were again downed by base air defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the U.S. military officially ended its combat mission in Iraq in December, around 2,500 troops will remain in-country in an advisory
