{"id":71552,"date":"2023-02-08T18:26:45","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T18:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/08\/biden-misstates-veterans-suicide-problem-in-state-of-the-union-speech\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:05:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:05:02","slug":"biden-misstates-veterans-suicide-problem-in-state-of-the-union-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/08\/biden-misstates-veterans-suicide-problem-in-state-of-the-union-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden misstates veterans suicide problem in State of the Union speech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Joe Biden exaggerated both the scope of the problem of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/19\/veterans-suicides-drop-to-lowest-rate-since-2006\/\" target=\"_blank\">veterans suicides<\/a> and his own administration\u2019s success at reducing the totals during his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/07\/biden-to-call-for-more-support-for-homeless-vets-in-state-of-the-union\/\" target=\"_blank\">State of the Union address<\/a> to Congress on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The misleading comments came as the commander-in-chief pledged to bolster mental health services and financial support for veterans as part of a broader agenda of improving support services for all Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After noting improvements made last year on improving benefits for veterans dealing with military toxic exposure injuries, Biden singled out Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough during his speech and praised him for work thus far to help prevent veterans facing mental health crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were losing up to 25 veterans a day on suicide,\u201d Biden said. \u201cNow we\u2019re losing 17 a day to the silent scourge of suicide \u2026 more than all the people being killed in the wars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/07\/biden-to-call-for-more-support-for-homeless-vets-in-state-of-the-union\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22061084289997.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Biden to call for more support for homeless vets in State of the Union<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Expanding services for veterans facing mental health and financial problems will also be key features of the upcoming presidential budget request.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those statistics don\u2019t match annual reports from the Department of Veterans Affairs, which show a 20-year high of about 19 veteran suicides a day in 2018 (6,796 veteran suicide deaths nationwide).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent statistics \u2014 from 2020 \u2014 put that figure at just under 17 a day (6,146 total deaths).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That total occurred during President Donald Trump\u2019s last year in office. Because of a two-year lag time in compiling census data on suicides, the impact of any policies from the Biden administration is still unknown. Data on veteran suicide rates in 2021 is expected to be released later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 2010s, before reliable census data was made public annually by federal researchers, veterans advocates frequently cited the veterans suicide statistic of \u201c22 a day\u201d based off partial estimates of deaths from a small number of states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in recent years, VA officials have frequently sought to correct that figure, to more accurately reflect the reality of the problem and better target efforts to provide solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/19\/veterans-suicides-drop-to-lowest-rate-since-2006\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6829847.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans suicides drop to lowest rate since 2006<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">But veterans are still significantly more likely to die by suicide than their civilian peers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2001, the number of veterans suicides has fluctuated between 16 and 19 a day, according to VA statistics. When active duty troops and reservists are factored in, the total is about 20 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, officials from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/17\/veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests\/\" target=\"_blank\">America\u2019s Warrior Partnership<\/a> released a report suggesting the veterans suicide rate may be more than 40 a day, once drug overdoses and other unclassified deaths are factored in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VA officials have publicly pushed back against those estimates, calling the higher figures out of step with normal data collection practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from the White House and VA declined comment on the president\u2019s errors in the State of the Union speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden said he was committed to pulling the number of suicides down further in coming years, to include \u201cexpanding mental health screenings, proven programs that recruit veterans to help other veterans understand what they\u2019re going through and get them the help they need\u201d to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to do more,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the incorrect figures, Biden received praise from a number of lawmakers and outside advocates for including the issue of veterans suicide in the national speech. Details of new VA support programs for individuals facing mental health and financial emergencies are expected to be unveiled with the president\u2019s fiscal 2024 budget plan, due out early next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 988 or 1-800-273-8255.
