Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2023\/01\/30\/turkey-frustrates-finlands-and-swedens-nato-bids\/\" target=\"_blank\">Finland and Sweden<\/a> applied to become NATO members 10 months ago in the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2022\/06\/02\/how-sweden-and-finland-could-reshape-natos-northern-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, abandoning decades of nonalignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO requires the unanimous approval of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2022\/07\/20\/finland-and-sweden-in-nato-are-strategic-assets-not-liabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\">30 existing members<\/a> to expand, and Turkey and Hungary are the only countries that have not yet ratified the Nordic nation\u2019s bids. The Turkish government accused both Sweden and Finland of being too soft on groups that it deems to be terror organizations, but expressed more reservations about Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen it comes to fulfilling its pledges in the trilateral memorandum of understanding, we have seen that Finland has taken authentic and concrete steps,\u201d Erdogan told a news conference in Ankara following his meeting with Niinisto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis sensitivity for our country\u2019s security and, based on the progress that has been made in the protocol for Finland\u2019s accession to NATO, we have decided to initiate the ratification process in our parliament,\u201d the president added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Erdogan\u2019s agreement, Finland\u2019s application can now go to the Turkish parliament, where the president\u2019s party and its allies hold a majority. Ratification is expected before Turkey holds its presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for May 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg applauded the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI welcome today\u2019s decision by Turkey to move ahead with the ratification of Finland\u2019s membership in NATO,\u201d he said in a statement Friday. \u201cThis will strengthen Finland\u2019s security, it will strengthen Sweden\u2019s security, and it will strengthen NATO\u2019s security. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most important thing is that both Finland and Sweden become full members of NATO quickly, not whether they join at exactly the same time,\u201d Stoltenberg noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erdogan had suggested Wednesday that his country might take up Finland\u2019s accession following Niinisto\u2019s trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey, Finland and Sweden signed an agreement in June of last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2022\/12\/29\/sweden-finland-try-future-ally-path-with-turkey-in-bid-to-join-nato\/\" target=\"_blank\">to resolve differences<\/a> over the Nordic states\u2019 membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document included clauses addressing Ankara\u2019s claims that Stockholm and Helsinki did not take seriously enough its concerns with those it considers terrorists, particularly supporters of Kurdish militants who have waged a 39-year insurgency in Turkey and people Ankara associates with a 2016 coup attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A series of separate demonstrations in Stockholm, including a protest by an anti-Islam activist who burned the Quran outside the Turkish Embassy, also angered Turkish officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and lawmakers have repeatedly promised to ratify the two country\u2019s NATO membership applications. But the country\u2019s parliament has repeatedly postponed a ratification vote and hasn\u2019t given a firm date on when the vote would take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erdogan on Wednesday suggested that his country may soon agree to Finland\u2019s application to join NATO. Turkish officials previously said that Finland joining ahead of Sweden was a more likely outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Niinisto arrived in Turkey on Thursday and toured areas affected by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that killed more than 52,000 people in Turkey and Syria last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have known Erdogan for a long time. I am sure he has important messages,\u201d Niinisto said Thursday while visiting Kahramanmaras, one of the provinces worst-hit by the Feb. 6 earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before leaving Helsinki, Niinisto said Turkish officials had requested his presence in Ankara to announce Turkey\u2019s decision on the Finnish bid. He also stressed his support for Sweden\u2019s swift admission and in a Twitter post said he had had a \u201cgood conversation\u201d with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson prior to his Turkey trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristersson said Sweden hoped for \u201ca rapid ratification process\u201d after Turkey\u2019s May 14 presidential and parliamentary
