They are dated ranging from Feb. 23 to March 1, and provide what appears to be details on the progress of weapons and equipment going into Ukraine with more precise timelines and amounts than the U.S. generally provides publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2023\/04\/04\/us-to-send-ukraine-another-26-billion-in-military-aid\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP23094007462911.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US to send Ukraine another $2.6 billion in military aid<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The latest U.S. package brings the total amount of U.S. security assistance to Ukraine to more than $35.1 billion since Russia invaded in February 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not war plans and they provide no details on any planned Ukraine offensive. And some inaccuracies \u2014 including estimates of Russian troops deaths that are significantly lower than numbers publicly stated by U.S. officials \u2014 have led some to question the documents\u2019 authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement Friday, Sabrina Singh, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said the Defense Department \u201cmade a formal referral\u201d of the matter to the Justice Department for investigation. And the Justice Department, in a separate statement Friday, said, \u201cWe have been in communication with the Department of Defense related to this matter and have begun an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation comes as questions continued to swirl about the origination and the validity of the documents, and as reports suggest more have begun to appear on social media sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is very important to remember that in recent decades, the Russian special services\u2019 most successful operations have been taking place in Photoshop,\u201d Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine\u2019s military intelligence directorate, said on Ukrainian TV. \u201cFrom a preliminary analysis of these materials, we see false, distorted figures on losses on both sides, with part of the information collected from open sources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, however, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy\u2019s office released a statement Friday about a meeting he had with his senior military staff, and it noted that \u201cthe participants of the meeting focused on measures to prevent the leakage of information regarding the plans of the defense forces of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the published documents are authentic to any degree, however, the leak of classified data is troubling and raises questions about what other information about the Ukraine war \u2014 or any coming offensive \u2014 could be distributed. U.S. officials on Friday provided no clarity on the origin of the documents, their authenticity, or who actually was the first to post them online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times was the first to report about the documents. Later Friday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/07\/us\/politics\/classified-documents-leak.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Times reported that more documents<\/a>&nbsp;involving Ukraine as well as other sensitive national security topics such as China and the Middle East had begun appearing on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One U.S. official said the initial documents resemble data produced daily by the Joint Staff, although some numbers are wrong. Even if they were legitimate, the official said, the U.S. believes there is little real intelligence value to the documents, since much of it is information Russia would already know or could glean from the battlefield. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charts and graphs describe some battlefield status of both sides from a month ago, U.S. military movements during the previous 24 hours, personnel numbers and the local weather outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are errors. Under a section titled \u201cTotal Assessed Losses,\u201d one document lists 16,000-17,500 Russian casualties and up to 71,000 Ukrainian casualties. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said publicly last November that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-zelenskyy-europe-army-joint-chiefs-of-staff-688e99d37f25ac8340b6a96a79a89abf\" target=\"_blank\">Russia has lost \u201cwell over\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;100,000 soldiers, and Ukraine had lost about that many also.
