{"id":72435,"date":"2023-04-17T18:44:05","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T18:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/17\/us-helicopter-raid-in-syria-targets-an-islamic-state-leader\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:57:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:57:21","slug":"us-helicopter-raid-in-syria-targets-an-islamic-state-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2023\/04\/17\/us-helicopter-raid-in-syria-targets-an-islamic-state-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"US helicopter raid in Syria targets an Islamic State leader"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: This story has been updated with the name of the raid\u2019s target.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BEIRUT \u2014 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/12\/11\/us-raid-kills-2-islamic-state-militants-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">helicopter raid by U.S. forces in northern Syria<\/a> early on Monday early on Monday killed a senior leader of the militant Islamic State group, the U.S. military said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Central Command <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PRESS-RELEASES\/Press-Release-View\/Article\/3364633\/helicopter-raid-in-northern-syria-targets-senior-isis-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement that the IS leader<\/a>, Abd-al-Hadi Mahmud al-Haji Ali, was \u201cresponsible for planning terror attacks in the Middle East and Europe.\u201d Two other alleged IS members, were killed along with al-Haji Ali who was the target of the raid, CENTCOM said. The statement said no civilians or U.S. troops were hurt in the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said the raid was launched after intelligence uncovered a plan by IS to \u201ckidnap officials abroad as leverage for (IS) initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria\u2019s White Helmets, a civil defense group operating in opposition-held areas of northern Syria, said it transported two people wounded during the raid to a local hospital, which later said they had died. A third person was killed when the U.S. forces landed for the raid, the White Helmets said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, which partners with the U.S. in anti-IS operations in northeast Syria, said that the operation was launched from a base near the town of Kobani and targeted a military site belonging to a Turkish-backed armed opposition group, Suqour al-Shamal, in the village of Suwayda in the region of Jarablus, near the Turkish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, reported that the raid had resulted in the arrest of a senior IS leader and killed three people. The U.S. military made no mention of any arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Observatory said \u201cviolent clashes\u201d took place after the helicopter landed, the first such landing this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/03\/26\/a-look-at-the-us-military-mission-in-syria-and-its-dangers\/\" target=\"_blank\">At least 900 U.S. troops are deployed in Syria<\/a>, along with an undisclosed number of contractors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Islamic State group, which swept through Iraq and Syria in 2014, taking control of large swaths of territory, was defeated in Syria in 2019, but sleeper cells maintain a presence and periodically stage attacks on military and civilian
