Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, is expressing concerns that nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/05\/30\/army-vet-turned-dc-insider-now-a-historic-nominee-for-veterans-affairs\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Chief of Staff Tanya Bradsher<\/a> is in part responsible for failing to safeguard whistleblowers\u2019 identities from their bosses \u2014 a long-promised reform to the VA\u2019s internal messaging system. If Grassley doesn\u2019t get a satisfying answer, he could halt the promotion of the first woman of color ever to hold the second-highest leadership post in VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA and Ms. Bradsher must immediately explain their failure to protect this information for so long, even after being notified of these potential violations of federal data privacy laws,\u201d Grassley wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_to_va__-_views_issue.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">in a letter to VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> last Friday, just one day after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/05\/30\/army-vet-turned-dc-insider-now-a-historic-nominee-for-veterans-affairs\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>Bradsher appeared before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/16\/bill-would-launch-clinical-trials-on-cannabis-use-for-vets-pain-ptsd\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee<\/a> for her confirmation hearing. \u201cVA must also explain its delays in investigating the matter, while this sensitive information apparently remains available to those who should not have access to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/05\/30\/army-vet-turned-dc-insider-now-a-historic-nominee-for-veterans-affairs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/52246094819_cf96d0e925_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army vet turned DC insider now a historic nominee for Veterans Affairs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA Chief of Staff Tanya Bradsher is in line to be the first woman confirmed to the department&#039;s second-highest post.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At issue is VA\u2019s Integrated Enterprise Workflow Solution (VIEWS) system, used by department officials to track all correspondence. Last year, an Office of Special Counsel report found that information on that system is not adequately secured, which could lead to whistleblowers\u2019 confidential communications with senior staff and lawmakers being uncovered by senior staffers who wish to retaliate against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administration officials ordered fixes to be made by early fall 2022, but Grassley\u2019s office noted that \u201cmore than ten months later, that investigation remains incomplete.\u201d Grassley wants explanations for that delay by June 16, as well as how officials will better protect that personal information, and what Bradsher\u2019s role has been in pushing for improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials did not respond to requests for comment on Grassley\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grassley has not yet threatened to hold up Bradsher\u2019s nomination, which still has to be voted on by the full Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee. But he held up the nomination of VA Under Secretary of Benefits Joshua Jacobs for two months earlier this year over similar whistleblower protection complaints. Jacobs was eventually confirmed after chamber leaders used procedural rules to get around the block and force a full chamber vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grassley\u2019s challenge is the first significant roadblock in Bradsher\u2019s nomination process. Chuck Grassley said he is upset with both VA leadership and the nominee to oversee department benefits operations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/05\/30\/army-vet-turned-dc-insider-now-a-historic-nominee-for-veterans-affairs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bradsher, 53, is an Army veteran who has served in the VA Chief of Staff role since March 2021<\/a>, working as the most senior advisor to McDonough. She has held multiple leadership roles in the Defense Department, Department of Homeland Security and White House over the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If confirmed, she\u2019ll be the first woman to hold the role full time; three others have served as acting deputies. Bradsher, who is Black, would also be the first woman of color to ever hold the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester, D-Mont., said last week he hopes to move Bradsher\u2019s nomination through the Senate \u201cas quickly as we possibly can.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
