{"id":72547,"date":"2023-05-16T21:53:02","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T21:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/05\/16\/wwi-era-biplane-loses-war-against-gravity-again\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:23:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:23:36","slug":"wwi-era-biplane-loses-war-against-gravity-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2023\/05\/16\/wwi-era-biplane-loses-war-against-gravity-again\/","title":{"rendered":"WWI-era biplane loses war against gravity (again)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Military Times had a nickel for each time in the past six years that a Kentucky pilot crashed a World War I-era biplane and survived, we\u2019d have 15 cents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That isn\u2019t enough money to repair the Curtiss JN-4 \u201cJenny\u201d replica that crashed (again) Monday \u2014 with no serious injuries \u2014 at a Kentucky National Guard training center, but it\u2019s certainly 15 cents more than we expected to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1917 model plane, one of six \u2014 er, five \u2014 airworthy Jennies left in the world, crash-landed at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center near Greenville, Kentucky, early Monday evening, according to a Kentucky National Guard press release. Spokesperson Capt. Cody Stagner told Military Times that the plane was returning from an airshow at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, when its engine suddenly lost power, causing the pilot to make a controlled crash-landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane is the same Jenny built by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsofjenny.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of Jenny<\/a>, a historical non-profit that aims to educate the public about early American military aviation. The organization reportedly invested 10,000 technician hours into building the plane, which mostly aligned with the original manufacturer\u2019s specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it\u2019s the same Jenny that crashed on a Bowling Green, Kentucky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgdailynews.com\/news\/historic-jenny-plane-crashes-at-golf-course\/article_6bb36254-c34d-5c46-9623-f770eee2ec6b.html\" target=\"_blank\">golf course<\/a> in 2017, according to the Bowling Green Daily News. The pilot survived with minor injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its owner, Dorian Walker, wasn\u2019t at the controls for that crash. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgdailynews.com\/news\/up-in-the-air-fate-of-jenny-biplane-uncertain-after-crash\/article_697c179a-205a-5dd4-a87b-c1881fcf26bf.html\" target=\"_blank\">spearheaded a fundraising effort<\/a> to get the plane back into the air while also overseeing the group\u2019s other WWI-era restoration project \u2014 the world\u2019s last airworthy de Havilland DH-4 biplane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Walker <i>was<\/i> at the sticks when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgdailynews.com\/news\/local-pilot-survives-crash-of-historic-wwi-era-biplane\/article_ba8ca2ec-f4ec-570b-b2a3-cd2ab089ccf5.html\" target=\"_blank\">DH-4<\/a> crashed in May 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After walking away from the 2020 crash unscathed, Walker told local reporters that his survival was \u201ca testimony to how well-built this plane is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walker was one of two pilots involved in Monday\u2019s crash as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His biplane flying days may be over, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walker\u2019s wife, Elaine Walker, told the Bowling Green Daily News that the wreckage could \u201ceasily\u201d be restored for a museum display after the Federal Aviation Administration completes its investigation of the crash. But getting it back into the air again? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo restore it to fly again would be a little more complex.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why do Kentucky pilots keep crashing World War I-era planes?
