{"id":73146,"date":"2022-09-28T18:35:34","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T18:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/09\/28\/north-korea-test-launches-missiles-on-eve-of-harris-trip-to-seoul\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:33:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:33:42","slug":"north-korea-test-launches-missiles-on-eve-of-harris-trip-to-seoul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/flashpoints\/2022\/09\/28\/north-korea-test-launches-missiles-on-eve-of-harris-trip-to-seoul\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea test launches missiles on eve of Harris trip to Seoul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SEOUL, South Korea \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/09\/09\/north-korea-says-it-will-never-give-up-nukes-to-counter-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">North Korea<\/a> fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters on Wednesday, its neighbors said, a day before U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is to visit South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seoul\u2019s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the North Korean missiles lifted off 10 minutes apart on Wednesday afternoon from its capital region and flew toward the waters off its east coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japanese Vice Defense Minister Toshiro Ino said Japan\u2019s military also detected the launches and that the weapons flew in an irregular trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ino said that \u201cNorth Korea\u2019s repeated missile firings amid [Russia\u2019s] invasion of Ukraine is impermissible.\u201d The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea\u2019s provocations would only deepen its international isolation while pushing South Korea and the United States to strengthen their deterrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The launches follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/09\/25\/south-korea-says-north-korea-test-fired-missile-toward-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">a missile test by North Korea earlier this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris is to arrive in South Korea on Thursday for talks with President Yoon Suk Yeol and other officials. She also is to visit the tense border with North Korea, in what U.S. officials call an attempt to underscore the strength of the U.S.-South Korean alliance and the U.S. commitment to \u201cstand beside\u201d South Korea in the face of any North Korea threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/09\/26\/uss-ronald-reagan-south-korean-ships-launch-drills\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22269114076809.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">USS Ronald Reagan, South Korean ships launch drills<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The combined training started one day after North Korea test-fired a short-range ballistic missile in a possible response to the exercise.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. and South Korean navy ships were also conducting drills off South Korea\u2019s east coast in a show of force against North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/09\/26\/uss-ronald-reagan-south-korean-ships-launch-drills\/\" target=\"_blank\">The four-day exercise, which began Monday, involves the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan<\/a>. It is the first training exercise by the allies involving a U.S. aircraft carrier near the Korean Peninsula since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises often draw a furious response from North Korea, which views them as an invasion rehearsal. A short-range North Korean missile launched Sunday was seen as a response to the U.S.-South Korean training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea and Japan estimated that the North Korean missiles fired Wednesday flew 185-220 miles with a maximum altitude of 19-30 miles. The low trajectories resembled the flight of the missile fired on Sunday, which some analysts said was likely a nuclear-capable, highly maneuverable weapon modeled after Russia\u2019s Iskander missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, North Korea has been adding Iskander-like missiles and other solid-fuel weapons to its arsenal. Some experts say the weapons are designed to carry battlefield nuclear warheads to counter the stronger conventional forces of South Korea and the United States, which stations about 28,500 troops in the South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">North Korea has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/03\/10\/north-korea-testing-new-icbms-us-says-warns-more-coming\/\" target=\"_blank\">dialed up its missile testing activities to a record pace<\/a> in 2022, launching more than 30 ballistic weapons, including its first intercontinental ballistic missiles since 2017. North Korea\u2019s Sunan area where Wednesday\u2019s launches occurred was the site of various missile tests this year, including two ICBMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, North Korea adopted a new law authorizing the preemptive use of nuclear weapons in some situations, as it continues to escalate its nuclear doctrine. In May, China and Russia vetoed a U.S.-led bid to impose new sanctions on North Korea over its ballistic missile tests this year, which violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier Wednesday, South Korea\u2019s spy agency told lawmakers that a North Korean nuclear test could happen between mid-October and early November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to some lawmakers who attended the meeting, the National Intelligence Service said if the test occurs, it is likely to come after China, North Korea\u2019s last major ally, holds a key Communist Party congress on Oct. 16 but before the United States votes in midterm elections on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spy service also said North Korea recently began administering COVID-19 vaccines to its people for the first time, Yoo Sang-bum, one of the lawmakers present at the briefing, said without elaborating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, leader Kim Jong Un told his country\u2019s rubber-stamp parliament that North Korea would begin its rollout of vaccines. In August, he made a widely disputed claim that his country had overcome its first COVID-19 outbreak and ordered an easing of pandemic-related restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
