{"id":73970,"date":"2023-09-15T20:03:52","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T20:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/09\/15\/house-republicans-demand-data-on-va-abortion-procedures\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:54:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:54:54","slug":"house-republicans-demand-data-on-va-abortion-procedures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2023\/09\/15\/house-republicans-demand-data-on-va-abortion-procedures\/","title":{"rendered":"House Republicans demand data on VA abortion procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican leaders from the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee are threatening to subpoena data on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/02\/va-to-provide-abortions-in-cases-of-rape-danger-to-womans-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">abortions performed at Veterans Affairs facilities<\/a> if the department keeps refusing to turn over the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/11\/14\/va-secretary-makes-promise-we-will-be-vets-best-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a>, committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/02\/new-house-vets-chair-plans-focus-on-pact-act-oversight-medical-access\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chairman Mike Bost<\/a>, R-Ill., and health subcommittee Chairwoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home\/2023\/08\/22\/nearly-two-years-later-afghan-allies-still-left-hoping-for-help\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mariannette Miller-Meeks<\/a>, R-Iowa, said they will schedule a vote to force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/09\/14\/va-wont-restart-health-records-overhaul-until-next-summer-if-at-all\/\" target=\"_blank\">the department<\/a> to turn over the information if it is not released to their panel by the end of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmerican taxpayers funding these abortion procedures at VA deserve to know how VA is carrying out the policy,\u201d the pair said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demand is the latest in a series of increasingly tense exchanges between the committee and VA leadership over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/12\/14\/va-employee-sues-department-over-new-abortion-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">the issue of abortion<\/a>. In September 2022, department leaders announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/07\/advocates-draw-battle-lines-ahead-of-looming-va-abortion-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">offer abortion access to veterans and eligible dependents<\/a> in cases of rape, incest and pregnancies that endanger the life or health of an individual, saying the change was needed in the wake of numerous states limiting and outlawing the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/02\/va-to-provide-abortions-in-cases-of-rape-danger-to-womans-life\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1242677087.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to provide abortions in cases of rape, danger to veteran\u2019s health<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Abortions could be conducted at VA medical centers, even in states where the procedure is outlawed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican lawmakers have decried the move, saying it violates state and federal laws. Committee leaders have repeatedly asked for in-depth data on the number of abortions performed and where the procedures took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, VA officials told committee members that they had provided 54 surgical or medical abortions over the previous nine months. Of those, 10 were cases of rape, incest or imminent danger to the life of a patient. The others fell under the general category of adverse effect on the health of a veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But McDonough, in response to the committee, declined to release any more specifics on the procedures, citing patient confidentiality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee members have not received any updates since then. Friday\u2019s letter dismissed VA\u2019s privacy concerns and demanded more information, particularly on what is included in the health concerns category used to justify abortion services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have yet to receive any information regarding what documented conditions led to a \u2018health\u2019 determination, which we consider an important element since VA notes the largest number of abortions performed were because of \u2018health\u2019 reasons,\u201d the lawmakers wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress is considering several bills which would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/06\/13\/gop-budget-bill-would-ban-abortions-transgender-services-at-va\/\" target=\"_blank\">undo VA\u2019s abortion policy<\/a>, including language attached to the annual department appropriations bill by House Republicans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/07\/24\/biden-threatens-va-budget-bill-veto-over-limits-on-abortion-lgbt-care\/\" target=\"_blank\">The White House has threatened to veto any such legislation<\/a>, saying that access to abortion is a critical reproductive health need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar abortion access policies issued by the Defense Department late last year have led to a nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/09\/12\/senate-republicans-now-blame-democrats-for-military-leadership-gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\">seven-month standoff in the Senate over the confirmation of defense officials<\/a>, leaving about 300 senior uniformed officers waiting for
