The case drew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/biden-admin-ny-officials-slammed-homeless-veterans-booted-migrant-hotels-slap-face\" target=\"_blank\">national attention from conservative outlets<\/a> and mainstream media, and furthered political fights over whether the federal government is doing too much to help new immigrants and not enough to help struggling veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident began on May 12, when <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/12\/homeless-vets-are-being-booted-from-ny-hotels-to-make-room-for-migrants-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\">the New York Post reported<\/a> that about 20 veterans staying in a Newburgh, N.Y., hotel had been kicked out by management to make room for incoming migrants being housed through county funding. Leaders from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yitfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yerik Israel Toney Foundation<\/a> said they had to scramble to find new housing overnight to keep the veterans from ending up back on the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/03\/15\/va-aims-to-help-38000-homeless-veterans-again-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_212594476007.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA aims to help 38,000+ homeless veterans again this year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department is repeating its goal from last year in 2023, with some additional benchmarks for outreach.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, New York State Assemblyman Brian Maher \u2014 himself a Navy veteran \u2014 introduced legislation to prohibit any such future harm to veterans. He blamed \u201cthe failure of the federal government to better manage the migrant crisis\u201d as the reason for the veterans\u2019 plight. In an interview with Military Times, Maher said he had worked closely with the foundation for years and spoke to several individuals who said they were displaced by the moves. He was also given bank records showing hotel payments by the non-profit on behalf of the veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as the story was picked up by national media, details began to unravel. Veterans Affairs officials said they had no record of any direct work with the New York charity, or any reports of veterans in need of help from local partners. They also said their requests to speak with the veterans were refused by foundation leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Putting migrants ahead of veterans is downright shameful and completely unacceptable, and yet, not at all surprising coming from this Administration and its allies in blue states.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yw2Yp7e3b8\">https:\/\/t.co\/yw2Yp7e3b8<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Rep. Brian Mast (@RepBrianMast) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepBrianMast\/status\/1658130027177811972?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 15, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 17, <a href=\"https:\/\/midhudsonnews.com\/2023\/05\/17\/questions-remain-as-to-if-vets-were-displaced-from-hotel-by-asylum-seekers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Mid Hudson News reported <\/a>that hotel officials had no record of any payments by the Yerik Israel Toney Foundation or of homeless veterans using their location for temporary housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maher said he confirmed a day later that the veterans in question never existed, and that the incident was made up in an misguided attempt by foundation officials to draw attention to veterans issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy heart is broken,\u201d he said. \u201cThis looks to have been a complete and elaborate lie. [The foundation] had a lot of people working on this, and I had trust in them. But in the end, this did not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foundation Executive Director Sharon Finch did not respond to requests for comment. Maher said he spoke with her on Thursday and she admitted the fraud. He has called for an investigation by the New York State Attorney General into the foundation in light of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/midhudsonnews.com\/2023\/05\/19\/homeless-men-recruited-for-veteran-hotel-scam\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Mid Hudson News spoke to seven local homless veterans<\/a> who said they were recruited by the foundation to lie about their experiences as part of the scheme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the lies, Maher said he is undeterred in his opposition to President Joe Biden\u2019s immigration policies and their potential effects on states like New York. But he conceded that in this case, the concerns were unfounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the retraction gets as much attention as the initial news reports remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Veterans who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness can call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838, or <\/i><a
