{"id":74851,"date":"2024-02-22T21:27:51","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T21:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/02\/22\/black-soldiers-wrongly-executed-for-1917-riot-get-new-headstones\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:57:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:57:11","slug":"black-soldiers-wrongly-executed-for-1917-riot-get-new-headstones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2024\/02\/22\/black-soldiers-wrongly-executed-for-1917-riot-get-new-headstones\/","title":{"rendered":"Black soldiers wrongly executed for 1917 riot get new headstones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials on Thursday dedicated 17 new gravestones at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/01\/nazi-headstones-will-be-removed-from-us-veterans-cemeteries-va-leaders-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery<\/a> in Texas to honor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/02\/14\/va-updating-outreach-work-in-effort-to-end-benefits-gap-for-black-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black soldiers<\/a> unjustly convicted and executed following the 1917 Houston racial riots, calling it part of an effort to \u201cright the wrongs of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes three months after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/11\/14\/army-clears-convictions-of-black-soldiers-charged-in-1917-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Army officials set aside courts-martial convictions of 110 Black soldiers<\/a> of the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment \u2014 also known as the Buffalo Soldiers \u2014 involved in the violence. Service officials found that the men were not given fair trials and ordered that their military records be revised to reflect their honorable service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/webcast\/33708\" target=\"_blank\">In a ceremony<\/a> attended by descendants of the men and local civil rights activists, VA and Defense Department officials unveiled the new headstones and pledged to continue to try to make amends for past racial injustices.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2023\/11\/14\/army-clears-convictions-of-black-soldiers-charged-in-1917-riot\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/165-WW-127-001_25-2987M.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army clears convictions of Black soldiers charged in 1917 riot<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In all, 19 men were executed and 110 convicted in a series of flawed, racist courts-martial.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEqual justice belongs to all soldiers, today and every day,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/09\/12\/bradsher-becomes-first-woman-confirmed-to-vas-second-highest-post\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Deputy Secretary Tanya Bradsher<\/a>. \u201cThis day, in some small way, reflects the progress we have made as a nation since these men were first buried here over a century ago. It\u2019s progress that makes clear that all institutions must live up to the ideals and promise of our nation\u2019s constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 19 people died in the 1917 riots, sparked by the assault and arrest of several Black residents, including two soldiers, by white police officers searching for suspects in an unrelated set of crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the violence ended, more than 100 Black soldiers took up arms and entered the city, despite orders to stand down. In a series of speedy court-martial proceedings \u2014 during which a single soldier with limited legal training represented all of the defendants \u2014 110 Black soldiers were convicted of murder, mutiny and related crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of those, 13 were executed by hanging within days of the verdict, and six more shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army records say the bodies of the men were put in a mass grave until 1937, when 17 of them were exhumed, identified and relocated to Fort Sam Houston\u2019s graveyard. Until now, the headstones for each contained only a name and the year of their death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an effort to \u201cfully honor their service,\u201d the newly dedicated markers include names, states, ranks, units and dates of death. An interpretive marker nearby details the history behind the deaths and the changes made to military judicial procedures following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserves Yvette Bourcicot said the marker will serve as a charge to remind military leaders \u201cto make the Army a place where everyone who wants to serve can serve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA operates 34 soldiers\u2019 lots and monument sites across the nation, along with 155 national
