{"id":75646,"date":"2024-05-08T14:55:32","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T14:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/05\/08\/first-lady-honors-world-war-i-veterans-advocates-of-national-memorial\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:15:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:15:35","slug":"first-lady-honors-world-war-i-veterans-advocates-of-national-memorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2024\/05\/08\/first-lady-honors-world-war-i-veterans-advocates-of-national-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"First Lady honors World War I veterans, advocates of national memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First lady <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/12\/07\/jill-biden-helps-launch-new-employer-challenge-for-military-spouses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jill Biden<\/a> delivered remarks in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday during a reception to honor World War I veterans and those involved in the creation of the national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/18\/ceremony-heralds-opening-of-wwi-memorial-in-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\">World War I Memorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staff, volunteers and others involved in the endeavor gathered as Biden and Terry Hamby, chairman of the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission, spoke to a room that included descendants of World War I veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmerica will always remember your families\u2019 sacrifice,\u201d Biden said. \u201cMilitary spouses and children may not wear the uniform, but they serve our country, too. That was true a century ago, and it\u2019s true now. &#8230; Your work commemorates a generation who changed our world with their courage and their sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memorial, which is located at Pershing Park near the White House, is one of two national sites designated as World War I memorials. The other is located at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2016\/01\/26\/world-war-i-centennial-commission-selects-design-for-d-c-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">World War I Museum and Memorial<\/a> in Kansas City, Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hamby said the idea for a national memorial began when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2016\/01\/26\/world-war-i-centennial-commission-selects-design-for-d-c-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edwin Fountain<\/a>, a former vice chair of the commission, saw the local District of Columbia War Memorial to World War I service members on the National Mall in Washington. Fountain thought, \u201cWhy not a national memorial?\u201d Hamby told attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[The memorial] began with the families who sent their sons and daughters off to a country most had never visited, fight in war they certainly didn\u2019t start, but more importantly, were willing to die for peace and liberty for people they never met,\u201d Hamby said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Barack Obama signed the World War I Centennial Commission Act in 2013, which created the 12-member body to help provide input and direction for a national memorial, Hamby added. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2016\/01\/26\/world-war-i-centennial-commission-selects-design-for-d-c-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">2015 National Defense Authorization Act<\/a> later approved the creation of a memorial to honor the 4.7 million Americans who fought in World War I \u2014 and the 116,516 service members who died in the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National World War I Memorial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/18\/ceremony-heralds-opening-of-wwi-memorial-in-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\">opened to the public<\/a> in April 2021, but it will not be completed until September of this year. The focal point \u2014 a 58-foot bronze sculpture depicting a soldier\u2019s journey through the war \u2014 will be installed in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe soldiers\u2019 journey tells the story of a soldier and his comrades as they experience the horrors of war, but more importantly, of our great nation moving forward into a new century\u201d Hamby said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last U.S. World War I veteran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2016\/01\/26\/world-war-i-centennial-commission-selects-design-for-d-c-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Buckles<\/a>, died at age of 110 in 2011.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National World War I Memorial, which opened to the public in April 2021, will be completed in September of this
