Researchers affiliated with Brown University and Yale University will oversee the work, and begin enrolling participants early next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/11\/08\/psychedelics-may-soon-be-available-sort-of-to-treat-vets-with-ptsd\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1402545562.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Psychedelics may soon be available \u2014 sort of \u2014 to treat vets with PTSD<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration designated MDMA as a \u201cbreakthrough therapy\u201d for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA is on the cutting edge of clinical research for Veteran health, including in the investigation of psychedelics for mental health,\u201d Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in a statement. \u201cThis study will give us better insight into the potential of MDMA-assisted therapy as a treatment for veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the move is part of a broader effort to \u201cgather definitive scientific evidence on the potential efficacy and safety of psychedelic compounds,\u201d suggesting the research will not be limited to only this single study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatments will be conducted in a clinical setting with strict safety protocols and using pharmaceutical-grade MDMA. The study is expected to take five years to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials said that despite the upcoming interest in the potential benefits from psychedelics, veterans should not use them as part of a self-treatment program.
