He was 103.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chandler died Monday at a senior living center in Tequesta, Florida, according to Ron Mahaffee, the husband of his granddaughter Kelli Fahey. Chandler had congestive heart failure, but Mahaffee said doctors and nurses noted his advanced age when giving a cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/12\/27\/oldest-living-survivor-of-the-attack-on-pearl-harbor-dies-at-105\/\" target=\"_blank\">third Pearl Harbor survivor to die in the past few weeks<\/a>, Chandler was a hospital corpsman 3rd class on Dec. 7, 1941, when waves of Japanese fighter planes dropped bombs and fired machine guns on battleships in the harbor and plunged the U.S. into World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told The Associated Press in 2023 that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/military-history\/2024\/12\/07\/how-recovering-a-japanese-zero-at-pearl-harbor-added-to-its-mystery\/\" target=\"_blank\">saw the planes approach<\/a> as he was raising the flag that morning at a mobile hospital in Aiea Heights, which is in the hills overlooking the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought they were planes coming in from the states until I saw the bombs dropping,\u201d Chandler said. His first instinct was to take cover and \u201cget the hell out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was afraid that they\u2019d start strafing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His unit rode trucks down to attend the injured. He said in a Pacific Historic Parks oral history interview that he boarded a boat to help pluck wounded sailors from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The harbor was covered in oil from exploding ships, so Chandler washed the sailors off after lifting them out. He said he was too focused on his work to be afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt got so busy you weren\u2019t scared. Weren\u2019t scared at all. We were busy. It was after you got scared,\u201d Chandler said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He realized later that he could have been killed, \u201cBut you didn\u2019t think about that while you were busy taking care of people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack killed more than 2,300 U.S. servicemen. Nearly half, or 1,177, were sailors and Marines on board the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2024\/04\/01\/last-survivor-of-uss-arizona-dies-at-102\/?utm_medium=email&#038;utm_source=sailthru&#038;contentQuery=%7B%22includeSections%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22excludeSections%22%3A%22%22%2C%22feedSize%22%3A10%2C%22feedOffset%22%3A315%7D&#038;utm_campaign=mil-ebb&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" target=\"_blank\">USS Arizona<\/a>, which sank nine minutes after it was bombed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chandler\u2019s memories came flowing back when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/military-history\/2024\/12\/07\/this-sailor-fought-the-japanese-at-pearl-harborwith-football-pads-on\/\" target=\"_blank\">he visited Pearl Harbor<\/a> for a 2023 ceremony commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the bombing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI look out there, and I can still see what\u2019s going on. I can still see what was happening,\u201d Chandler told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked what he wanted Americans to know about Pearl Harbor, he said: \u201cBe prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe should have known that was going to happen. The intelligence has to be better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the war Chandler worked as a painter and wallpaper hanger and bought an upholstery business with his brother. He also joined the Navy reserves, retiring as a senior chief in 1981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chandler was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and lived for most of his adult life in nearby South Hadley, Mahaffee said. In recent decades he split his time between Massachusetts and Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An avid golfer, he shot five hole-in-ones during his lifetime, his grandson-in-law added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chandler had one biological daughter and adopted two daughters from his second marriage, to Anna Chandler, who died in 2004. He is survived by two daughters, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military historian J. Michael Wenger has estimated that there were some 87,000 military personnel on the island of Oahu the day of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pearl-harbor-survivor-dies-bob-fernandez-obit-c69fde4cf77c0fc87611caf69f241f56\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Fernandez<\/a>, who served on the USS Curtiss, died Dec. 11
