{"id":79945,"date":"2026-07-20T15:21:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T15:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/07\/20\/new-air-force-one-to-get-maxed-out-upgrades-after-security-questions\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:40:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:40:15","slug":"new-air-force-one-to-get-maxed-out-upgrades-after-security-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2026\/07\/20\/new-air-force-one-to-get-maxed-out-upgrades-after-security-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"New Air Force One to get \u2018maxed out\u2019 upgrades after security questions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/06\/10\/qatari-donated-air-force-one-now-sports-red-white-and-blue-paint-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/06\/10\/qatari-donated-air-force-one-now-sports-red-white-and-blue-paint-job\/\">Qatari-donated jet<\/a> that serves as an Air Force One plane will soon be sent away for upgrades, following questions about the plane\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/air\/2025\/05\/12\/experts-qatar-gifted-air-force-one-may-be-security-upgrade-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/air\/2025\/05\/12\/experts-qatar-gifted-air-force-one-may-be-security-upgrade-disaster\/\">security features<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/06\/30\/in-a-first-trump-will-travel-aboard-qatari-donated-air-force-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/06\/30\/in-a-first-trump-will-travel-aboard-qatari-donated-air-force-one\/\">started flying aboard the jumbo jet<\/a> on July 1 after accepting the plane as a gift last year, when an accelerated effort to renovate the Boeing 747 for presidential use began. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Trump unexpectedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2026\/07\/09\/trump-flies-old-air-force-one-out-of-turkey-switches-to-new-jet-in-britain-for-trip-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2026\/07\/09\/trump-flies-old-air-force-one-out-of-turkey-switches-to-new-jet-in-britain-for-trip-home\/\">ditched the plane<\/a> on a flight from Turkey to the United Kingdom amid rising hostility with Iran on July 8. He flew aboard an older Air Force One to London in what he described as a move \u201cfor old time\u2019s sake\u201d, but later boarded the new plane to return to the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump was asked about whether the newly renovated airplane lacked missile-defense capabilities as he returned home from a trip to the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has a lot of capability,\u201d Trump said of the plane. \u201cBut as I understand it, in about a month or so, they\u2019re gonna send it to have it be maxed out &#8230; It\u2019ll take about a month.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new plane, with red, white, dark blue and gold livery chosen by Trump, was refitted by defense contractor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/native\/l3harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/native\/l3harris\/\">L3Harris Technologies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s meant to serve as a temporary replacement as Boeing has struggled to deliver long-delayed next-generation Air Force One planes. Boeing is working to deliver two purpose-built 747-8s under a $3.9 billion fixed-price contract signed in 2018 that\u2019s now four years behind schedule and over budget. Delivery of the new planes is expected in mid-2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upgrades to the jet from Qatar were completed so quickly that some experts expressed concern that the plane may not be as secure as the baby blue Air Force One that preceded it. Critics also questioned the cost and propriety of accepting the gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times journalists who had reported on the security features of the new aircraft were subpoenaed earlier this month.
