Kelly Morrison, D-Minn. McDonough served as the top VA administrator for former President Joe Biden\u2019s four years in office and stepped down from the Cabinet post in January. He has largely stayed out of the public spotlight since then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, DNC officials said the event is designed to \u201chonor our military members and veterans and protect the care they so bravely earned.\u201d They\u2019ll also draw a contrast to the parade, which is centered around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/05\/22\/army-preps-for-250th-anniversary-parade-on-trumps-birthday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/05\/22\/army-preps-for-250th-anniversary-parade-on-trumps-birthday\/\">Army\u2019s 250th anniversary<\/a> but will take place on Trump\u2019s birthday and feature a massive procession of military equipment by the White House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials have downplayed the parade\u2019s links to Trump, calling it an event to help boost public awareness of the service\u2019s history and current missions. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2025\/05\/02\/army-plans-for-trump-birthday-parade-include-6600-troops-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Trump_Military_Parade_59767.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army plans for Trump birthday parade include 6,600 troops: Report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Plans for a potential military parade on President Trump\u2019s birthday call for more than 6,600 soldiers, at least 150 vehicles and 50 helicopters.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the size and scope of the event have ballooned since the White House intervened in planning earlier this year, with an estimated price tag of more than $40 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, Trump said the event would feature \u201cthousands and thousands of soldiers\u201d and \u201ca lot of those Army airplanes flying over the top, and tanks all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local city officials have expressed concerns about heavy Army vehicles damaging Washington roadways, while critics of Trump have compared the event to shows of military might usually seen in foreign dictatorships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parade and associated events are expected to bring tens of thousands of tourists to Washington for a day of military-themed celebrations, Army officials said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DNC officials have not announced plans for a formal protest of the parade, although local law enforcement is expecting some protesters along the parade route and in the nation\u2019s capital on Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before serving as VA Secretary, McDonough was White House Chief of Staff and Deputy National Security Advisor under former President Barack Obama. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Minnesota event is expected to focus on concerns surrounding the Trump administration\u2019s plans to cut staffing at VA offices. Current VA Secretary Doug Collins has proposed trimming more than 80,000 employees from the department workforce in the coming months, a cut of more than 15%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic lawmakers have decried the proposal, insisting it will hurt benefits and services.
