{"id":84158,"date":"2024-09-17T19:48:27","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T19:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/09\/17\/new-navy-contracts-boost-battle-command-electronic-warfare-potential\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:14:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:14:30","slug":"new-navy-contracts-boost-battle-command-electronic-warfare-potential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/2024\/09\/17\/new-navy-contracts-boost-battle-command-electronic-warfare-potential\/","title":{"rendered":"New Navy contracts boost battle command, electronic warfare potential"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy in August awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/news\/Navy-boost-fleets-electronic-attack-capability-Next-Generation-Jammer-Low-Band-contract-award\" target=\"_blank\">$587.4 million contract<\/a> to L3Harris Technologies to develop the Next Generation Jammer Low Band system for select aircraft, according to a Navy release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jammer system will be \u201cincreasing the lethality\u201d of 4th and 5th generation platforms and strike weapons, according to Rear Adm. John Lemmon, program executive officer for tactical aircraft programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The low band system under development is part of a larger system that will first augment and then replace the existing ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System on the EA-18G Growler, which is a specialized version of the F\/A-18F Super Hornet with electromagnetic warfare equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The added low band upgrade to the Grower will allow the aircraft to defeat more adversary systems. It is scheduled to reach early operational capability in 2029, according to a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the jamming system contract, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/news\/Navy-awards-contract-update-E-2D-router\/Fri-09062024-0935\" target=\"_blank\">Navy also awarded a $16 million<\/a> bid to Fuse Integration to equip the company\u2019s Fuse CORE 4.0 virtualized network system on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/09\/06\/northrop-grumman-secures-164m-contract-to-modify-hawkeye-aircraft-for-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\">E-2D Advanced Hawkeye<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Northrop Grumman-built Hawkeye is a battle management command and control platform, used to orchestrate multi-platform information sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $16 million upgrade will improve reliability and maintainability by replacing \u201cbulky and obsolete routers,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will also add the ability to host applications the current system can\u2019t handle, according to Shawn Thompson, the assistant program manager of systems engineering for the E-2D program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCORE 4.0 enables an additional layer of cyber-security for the platform by hosting new firewall applications as part of the Beyond Line-of-Sight upgrade program for the E-2D,\u201d Thompson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year the United States approved a $1.4 billion sale to Japan of the E-2D Hawkeye, with its radars, navigation and display systems included, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2023\/03\/08\/us-approves-nearly-14-billion-hawkeye-aircraft-sale-for-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon modified that contract to $1.5 billion this year.
