{"id":85061,"date":"2026-04-20T12:28:59","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T12:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/04\/20\/us-air-force-wants-better-infrared-jammers-for-its-combat-rescue-helicopters\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:30:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:30:26","slug":"us-air-force-wants-better-infrared-jammers-for-its-combat-rescue-helicopters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2026\/04\/20\/us-air-force-wants-better-infrared-jammers-for-its-combat-rescue-helicopters\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force wants better infrared jammers for its combat rescue helicopters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force is looking for better infrared countermeasures for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moody.af.mil\/About-Us\/Aircraft\/Article\/3516396\/hh-60w-jolly-green-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.moody.af.mil\/About-Us\/Aircraft\/Article\/3516396\/hh-60w-jolly-green-ii\/\">HH-60W<\/a>, the service\u2019s prime combat search-and-rescue helicopter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most recently, two of the helicopters were used in the high-profile rescue of downed American pilots over <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/hh-60w-with-recovered-f-15e-pilot-was-hit-by-iranian-fire-wounding-crew-members-of-the-helicopter-on-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Iran<\/a>, with one HH-60W <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/04\/08\/the-rescue-mission-that-brought-2-f-15e-strike-eagle-crew-members-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/04\/08\/the-rescue-mission-that-brought-2-f-15e-strike-eagle-crew-members-home\/\">taking multiple hits<\/a> from Iranian small-arms fire, wounding crew members aboard, said Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the HH-60W Jolly Green II lacks a capable advanced infrared countermeasures system, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/workspace\/contract\/opp\/24eeef3f86ea43f7948b187cccfe988c\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Sources Sought<\/a> notice from Air Force Material Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis absence significantly increases the risk of infrared-guided missile engagement, jeopardizing mission success, aircraft survivability, and crew safety,\u201d the notice warned. \u201cThe integration of an AIRCM system is critical to mitigating this threat and ensuring the platform can operate effectively in contested environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2026\/04\/08\/the-rescue-mission-that-brought-2-f-15e-strike-eagle-crew-members-home\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/9517111-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The rescue mission that brought 2 F-15E Strike Eagle crew members home<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The operation marked the first publicly acknowledged U.S. ground presence inside Iran since 1980.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is seeking contractors who can integrate two potential infrared countermeasures into the HH-60W: the Common Infrared Countermeasures system, or CIRCM, and the Distributed Aperture Infrared Countermeasure, or DAIRCM. These defensive systems will be provided by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe effort requires the complete integration of the AIRCM system with all existing HH-60W avionics, mission computers, and data buses,\u201d the notice says. \u201cThe final solution must not degrade the performance of any existing system.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contractors should also have \u201cspecific experience with the HH-60W platform\u2019s mechanical, electrical, power, and data bus architecture,\u201d the notice continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop Grumman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/what-we-do\/mission-solutions\/electro-optical-and-infrared-sensors-eo-ir\/circm-common-infrared-countermeasures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">CIRCM<\/a> uses a quantum cascade laser for \u201cfast, simultaneous break-lock jamming\u201d to disrupt infrared-homing missiles, the company said. Meanwhile, the Leonardo\u2019s laser-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardodrs.com\/what-we-do\/our-solutions\/advanced-sensing\/aircraft-sensing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">DAIRCM<\/a> \u201cutilizes a single sensor for both 2-color infrared missile warning and a wide angle field of view gimbal for threat countermeasures,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HH-60W is already equipped with six integrated chaff-and-flare dispensers, according to manufacturer Sikorsky\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/content\/dam\/lockheed-martin\/rms\/documents\/hh-60w\/CRH_HH60W_Sell_Sheet_1915373.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">product sheet<\/a>. It also has radar, laser, missile and hostile fire warning receivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HH-60W, which achieved initial operational capability in 2022, is replacing the aging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/02\/20\/structural-issues-plague-us-pave-hawk-helicopters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">HH-60G Pave Hawk<\/a>. The original plan was for 113 Jolly Green IIs, but the Air Force later trimmed the number to 75 amid <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/04\/iran-pilot-rescue-hh60-jolly-green-helicopter-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">concerns<\/a> over their suitability for potential operations against advanced adversaries, such as China and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The helicopter has a speed of 176 miles per hour and range of 690 miles.
