Officials at the U.S. Military Academy briefly prevented cars from leaving campus Monday morning as part of a hunt for a “suspicious vehicle” that a tipster thought was connected to the recent explosions in the New York City area.
The tipster told authorities that the vehicle belonged to a man “who fit the description of Ahmad Khan Rahami,” according to a statement from the school; Rahami is wanted by the FBI for questioning in connection with the bombings in Manhattan and in a New Jersey shore town.
Officials located the vehicle and its operator, who was identified not as a terror suspect, but as a West Point resident, according to the statement. Traffic restrictions were lifted in less than an hour, according to posts on the West Point garrison’s official Facebook page.
The academy is about a 90-minute drive north from New York City.
“Authorities at West Point continue to work directly with their county, state and federal counterparts in all matters of security,” the statement says. “West Point officials are encouraged by the active role citizens are taking to say something when they see something.”
