Panel considering Army’s future starts national tour in N.C.

The commission was established by Congress as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015 and is chartered with assessing the future size and force structure of the Army and its reserve components, and making recommendations to Congress based on their determinations. FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A panel that will make recommendations on the future of the Army has started its nationwide tour by hearing opinions about the Army in North Carolina.

Area media outlets report the National Commission on the Future of the Army is taking public and written comments before it releases its recommendations in February.

The first stop for the panel was Fayetteville near Fort Bragg where a dozen people spokes Wednesday. Then the commissioners traveled to Raleigh to hear from representatives of the North Carolina National Guard and state leaders.

Retired Gen. Carter F. Ham, the chairman of the eight-member commission, said the panel’s recommendations will focus on determining the right mix between the active duty Army, the National Guard and the Army Reserve to meet the nation’s needs.
