The West Point cadet who was missing since Friday has been found dead at the academy.

Cadet Kade Kurita, 20, was found dead Tuesday at 9:47p.m. at West Point after a five-day search, the academy announced in a release.

“We are grieving this loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to Cadet Kurita’s family and friends,” Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, superintendent of the academy, said in the release.

Kurita was reported missing Friday, Oct. 18, at about 5:30 p.m. when he failed to report for a military skills competition.

The cause of death is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, according to the release. No other details were released as of Wednesday morning.

The search for the cadet and a missing M4 rifle involved local, state and federal agencies including the Coast Guard and a military police company from Fort Drum, New York.

“I would like to thank the N.Y. State police and the 23rd MP Company along with partners,” Williams said. “They exhibited exceptional professionalism as demonstrated by their tremendous efforts in searching for Cadet Kurita.”

The search for the cadet was still underway on Tuesday with the arrival of about 130 soldiers from the 23rd Military Police Company.

Kurita, who is from Gardena, California, was identified in a Tuesday afternoon release from West Point.

He has been missing since Friday evening when he did not show up for a scheduled military skills competition.

“There has been no cell phone or financial activity in over 72 hours,” Col. Cecil Marson, the West Point garrison commander, said in the Tuesday afternoon update. “This leads us to believe that he is still in the vicinity of West Point.”

Soldiers from the 23rd Military Police Company from Fort Drum, New York, are now at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to join the ground search, according to a Tuesday update from the academy.

A West Point cadet was reported missing after he failed to report for a road march this weekend, and the academy set off a widespread search for him that began early Saturday morning and was still underway Sunday evening.

Also missing was an M4 rifle, and the cadet “may be a danger to himself,” the academy said in a release Sunday evening.

“The Cadet is not believed to have any magazines or ammunition,” the release stated. “There is no indication the Cadet poses a threat to the public, but he may be a danger to himself.”

The cadet was last seen about 5:30 p.m. Friday on the grounds of the academy, which is located on the shore of the Hudson River in New York state. Fellow cadets began searching for him when he missed the road march, which was part of a military skills competition this weekend.

When they couldn’t find him, military police took up a search of the installation at about 1 a.m. on Saturday morning and kept up the search through the day, according to the release.

The academy notified the New York State Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard was notified and began searching the shoreline. By late Sunday morning, the New York State Police were searching by helicopter, the release said, and also used search dogs and drones.

The cadet, a member of the Class of 2021 who was not named, was considered unaccounted for as of Sunday evening.

“West Point is operating under normal conditions with an increased force protection status,” the release stated. “We have increased Military Police patrols at sporting events and across the Academy as a precautionary measure and to assist in safely locating the missing Cadet.”

A check with local hospitals found he had not received medical treatment as of Sunday evening.

“I want to thank the local and state law enforcement agencies and emergency services for their tireless support,” Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, the academy superintendent, said in the release. “We will continue to search with all means possible, on and off West Point. Safely locating the Cadet remains our focus and number one priority.”

A soldier has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for stealing firearms and related charges from a series of incidents at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Christopher Darnell Harris, 25, will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term for the theft and possession of stolen firearms on Fort Bliss, U.S. Attorney John F. Bash announced on Thursday.

Harris had been separated from the Army but still had access to Fort Bliss, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge David Guaderrama.

Details were not immediately available about Harris’ separation from the service and when that took place.

The soldier, who is from Nacogdoches, Texas, admitted that he stole items including wallets and keys from the lockers of at least 10 service members at two gyms on post. Harris used the stolen keys to break into vehicles and steal two handguns, the Attorney’s Office said.

The incidents took place between April and June in 2017.

Harris pleaded guilty in April to two counts of possession of stolen firearms, one count of theft, unlawful carrying of firearms on Fort Bliss and possession of marijuana.

The Army has a new name for the training center that is the starting point for all soldiers going into Army medicine.

The Army’s Medical Department Center and School is now called the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence.

The medical training and education center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas was officially renamed on Sunday, the Army announced.

The new name reflects a reorganization that is shifting the center to align with Army Training and Doctrine Command.

What will be immediately obvious to soldiers is a lighter-weight acronym: “AMEDDC&S HRCoE” is now reduced to “MEDCoE.”

That bulkier acronym stood for Army Medical Department Center and School, Health Readiness Center of Excellence, which had been in use since 2015.

One year ago, the center began transitioning from Army Medical Command to TRADOC. That change is expected to be complete by Oct. 2.

The new, shorter acronym reflects a massive mission, said the two-star commander who has served in MEDCOM at least five times during his 34-year Army career, according to the Army’s release.

“The breadth and depth of our reach is staggering; this is the entry point for all members of the Army’s Medical Department,” said Maj. Gen. Patrick D. Sargent, commander of MEDCoE, at the renaming ceremony.

He said the reorganization supports the Army’s modernization efforts and will allow the organization to adapt and innovate “at the speed of modern, or future, warfare.”

Adaptive training will affect how Army medicine can respond to near-peer and peer adversaries in multi-domain operations, he said.

“That’s what this redesignation is all about,” Sargent said in the announcement. “Defining a successful path to the future so our soldiers can complete their mission and come home.”

About the Medical Center of Excellence

The CoE has two medical brigades, a noncommissioned officer academy and dozens of staff directorates including the new Fielded Force Integration Directorate.

MEDCoE will create a directorate of training and doctrine, similar to that of other TRADOC centers of excellence.

Nearly 30,000 soldiers are trained each year to go into one of the Army’s medical roles, which include combat medics, doctors, surgeons, nurses, veterinarians, dentists and physician assistants, aeromedical evacuation pilots, food inspectors, medical technicians and hospital administrators.

MEDCoE is the Defense Department’s largest civilian-accredited service school, according to the release.

Army medicine has made recent advances in controlling bleeding, burn care, amputee care, HIV and Zika vaccinations, brain injury evaluation and treatments, and regenerative medicine, the release said.

You can’t have hair down to there if you’re going to be an infantryman.

Reynaldo Arroyo, 23, had been growing his hair for 15 years, until it reached his waist and beyond. Last week, it was decision time.

On Thursday, he was grinning as great lengths of his hair were snipped off so he could join the Army. A video of the event was posted on the Salt Lake City Army Recruiting Battalion Facebook page.

He’s enlisting as an 11X to go infantry, and plans to go airborne, the Facebook post said.

“I’m just really excited to be enlisting in the Army,” he said in the video, right before he was shorn.

“Congratulations to Reynaldo Arroyo for enlisting in the #USArmy from the Missoula U.S. Army Recruiting Station.” the post reads.

“He decided to cut his hair in exchange for a brighter future with the Army.”

(Salt Lake City Army Recruiting Battalion via Facebook)

Arroyo plans to donate his hair to the Locks of Love foundation, according to the Facebook post.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to children who have lost their hair because of medical conditions.

After Arroyo’s haircut, he has an estimated 150 inches of hair to donate.

“Hopefully some lucky little girl is going to get it,” he said in the video.

For new Army recruits, it’s a good time to go infantry.

The Army has been striving to fill its 11X slots by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. As of the beginning of July, the Army had more than 3,000 of those openings to fill by that date.

To sweeten the deal, the Army in May increased bonuses for new infantry recruits, offering from $15,000 to $40,000, depending on the length of the initial contract, said officials at Army Recruiting Command. Recruits could get the $40,000 bonus for six-year enlistments.
