After one last dominating performance, a single military movie character stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Head and shoulders and campaign cover, that is.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman took out Capt. John Miller (“Saving Private Ryan”) in the final round of Battle Bracket: Clash of Characters voting to claim the title of best fictional military movie or television character ever. R. Lee Ermey’s “Full Metal Jacket” DI wasn’t seriously challenged in any of his six contests.

It’s a run that’s tough to sum up in a single word, but Ermey himself might’ve done the trick.

“Oorah!” said the actor in an emailed statement to Military Times.

“Another victory for Gunnery Sergeant Hartman,” he continued. “First, I would like to thank my longtime fans. You have been loyal, and I thank you. I appreciate all of your support. Anything that I can do to honor our veterans and those who serve this great nation, I am always going to do.

“This victory feels pretty sweet, as I am a huge movie buff.”

Gunny Hartman racked up a little less than 69 percent of the vote in the final. Along with Hanks’ World War II captain, Hartman’s tournament hit list included characters portrayed by John Wayne, Mel Gibson, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Duvall and Clint Eastwood, in a first-round battle of the Gunnys — Hartman vs. Tom Highway (“Heartbreak Ridge”).

It’s not the first time Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 drama has taken top honors in our March polling. “Full Metal Jacket” was named the best military movie by the Military Times audience in 2015, taking down “Patton” in the final.

The role earned Ermey a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor and would lead to dozens more on-screen appearances and several off-screen ones, where he provided voices for characters in the “Toy Story” franchise, “The Simpsons” and other properties.

The Marine veteran (he was medically retired in 1971 and received an honorary promotion from staff sergeant to gunnery sergeant in 2002) now hosts Outdoor Channel’s ” GunnyTime with R.
He’s also writtena bookand established a million-strong Facebook following.

After 62 contests, five rounds of voting, four regional champions and tens of thousands of ballots cast, it comes down to two established fan favorites as we seek the greatest on-screen fictional movie character ever.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (“Full Metal Jacket”) and Capt. John Miller (“Saving Private Ryan”) trounced their semifinal competition to earn spots in the championship round of Battle Bracket: Clash of Characters. Voting is open through Tuesday here; make your pick and spread it on social media using the hashtag #BattleBracket.

Vote in the championship round of Battle Bracket: Clash of Characters

Bounced in the semis were Benjamin Martin (“The Patriot”) and Lord Darth Vader, whose combined tournament hit list includes impressive entrants like Jack Reacher, NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and two captains: “Hawkeye” Pierce and Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America.

But Vader was outmatched by Capt. Miller, who amassed more than 70 percent of the vote. Gunny Hartman did even better, approaching 75 percent of the vote total in his win over Mel Gibson’s Martin.

R. Lee Ermey’s Vietnam-era drill instructor faced Tom Hanks’ World War II-era officer once before in Military Times-sponsored bracket play, albeit indirectly: “Full Metal Jacket” and “Saving Private Ryan” squared off in the semifinals of 2015’s Military Movie Madness, with “Full Metal Jacket” winning 58 percent to 42 percent. It was the most-voted-upon contest of the entire bracket, and “Full Metal Jacket” would go on to defeat “Patton” for the overall crown.

Find out about this year’s GI Film Festival

The winner will be announced on our voting page Tuesday, shortly after the polls close.

Unlike past Battle Bracket contests, this year’s Clash of Characters (vote now) didn’t begin with seeded contestants — Military Times staffers and outside movie experts chose the field, and early matchups were based on character types and designed to pique audience interest.

For example, a first-round contest pitted Capts. Kirk and Picard against one another to find out the greatest military man ever to helm the USS Enterprise. Kirk won, although the real answer is probably this person.

So with no seeds, there can be no favorites. At least not officially.

That said, two competitors have stood apart from the rest of the field throughout our search for the greatest fictional on-screen military character ever, and early results in our semifinal round haven’t bucked that trend for a second.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (“Full Metal Jacket”) and Capt. John Miller (“Saving Private Ryan”) have opened big leads over Benjamin Martin (“The Patriot”) and Darth Vader, respectively, as the semifinals reach the halfway point. Larger comebacks have taken place in our brackets in past years, but Mel Gibson’s colonial warrior and the Star Wars saga’s man in black each need late surge to avoid a ticket home.

Voting ends Friday at 3 p.m. Eastern. If you’ve already cast your ballot, head to social media and use the hashtag #BattleBracket to campaign for your semifinal favorite.

Voting for the Clash of Characters final round will begin immediately after the semifinals wrap up and will be decided early next week.

Colonial patriot versus iconic drill instructor. World War II officer versus … Sith lord?

It’s a four-way sprint to the end of Battle Bracket: Clash of Characters, where Military Times will crown the greatest on-screen fictional military movie character ever based on audience votes. Make your voice heard here, and don’t delay — polls close Friday afternoon.

After you’ve chosen your two finalists, check out four quick hits on the semifinal round matchups below.

1. Gibson’s gauntlet: Benjamin Martin (“The Patriot”) will take on perennial favorite Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (“Full Metal Jacket”) in the semifinal round after notching his latest in a series of impressive victories, edging John Rambo by less than 2 percentage points. Prior victims of Mel Gibson’s freedom fighter included Jack Reacher, Steve “Captain America” Rogers and Maj. Dutch Schaefer (“Predator”).

2. Lost in time: The other semifinal pits Capt. John Miller (“Saving Private Ryan”) against Darth Vader, characters separated by space and time and squarely on the opposite sides of the Force for much of their story arcs. Vader’s no stranger to style clashes, however: His route to the semifinals includes wins over a female Navy lieutenant, an NCIS agent and a bug-hunter.

3. Unfamiliar territory:

While some regions of the Clash of Characters bracket included entrants from multiple genres and film eras, the semifinals will throw open the remaining gates. It’ll be Gunny Hartman’s first skirmish against the star of a fairly recent film, and Tom Hanks’ Miller is a new level of celebrity power for Vader to try and strike down. Much like that other tournament in progress, prior performance can mean little.

4. Bye, Hawkeye:

The defeat of Capt. “Hawkeye” Pierce at the hands of Darth Vader in the quarterfinals marked not just the end of the road for the 4077th, it’s also the swan song for the small screen (with apologies to Elliott Gould). Of the semifinalists, only Vader has even a limited television presence thanks to various Star Wars properties, including one that could cost him votes

just on principle

Two Army pop-culture stalwarts are about to exit our search for the greatest on-screen fictional military character ever, unless late voters say otherwise.

Both John Rambo and Capt. Voting for the round of eight will conclude Wednesday at 3 p.m. Eastern. Here’s a peak at the regional-final vote totals as of late Monday morning:

Rambo’s reckoning?: Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo may have grossed nearly $730 million in worldwide box office over four films, but that take hasn’t translated into votes this time around — he’s under 47 percent in his Action Heroes regional final against Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson). “The Patriot” was the fifth-highest grossing R-rated film in 2000, per BoxOfficeMojo.com, edging out the Jim Carrey classic “Me, Myself and Irene.”

Empire vs. Emmys: Lord Darth Vader may add another TV icon to his kill list — after downing NCIS agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the round of 16, the man in black has a slim lead (53.23 percent to 46.77 percent) over “Hawkeye” Pierce this time out. Despite the galaxies that separate the two characters, they are creatures of a common timeline — the “MASH” TV finale, which averaged more than 105 million viewers, aired on Feb. 28, 1983, and “Return of the Jedi,” the final chapter in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, hit theaters less than three months later.

Gunny going forth: Barring a late surge from the Robert Duvall Fan Club, R. Lee Ermey’s Gunny Hartman will march into the semifinals over Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore. The Marine is leading by nearly 60 percentage points and remains a heavy favorite to take the Clash of Characters title come early April. “Apocalypse Now” fans may find some solace here.

Capt.
Eight entrants have survived the closest overall round in Battle Bracket history to reach the quarterfinals in our search for the greatest on-screen fictional movie character of all time.

The Clash of Characters round of 16 included two matchups where the winners received less than 51 percent of the vote. Two other winners received less than 60 percent. Even established fan favorites — characters who’ve been mopping the floor with their opposition so far — posted lower-than-average totals.

And now, everybody’s back to zero: Head here to vote in the quarterfinal round and help choose the regional champions, and check out some details on the showdowns below:

Action Hero Final: John Rambo vs. Benjamin Martin (“The Patriot”). Stallone’s killing machine has done the expected amount of damage on an easy path to the quarterfinals, but Mel Gibson’s freedom fighter has been a breakout star, downing both Captain America and Jack Reacher in early round action.

Big Stars and Blockbusters Final: Col. Nathan Jessep vs. Capt. John Miller. Jack Nicholson’s Marine officer came from behind to sink Capt. Marko Ramius (“The Hunt for Red October”) to reach the round of eight, while the “Saving Private Ryan” officer knocked out “Maverick” Mitchell to advance. The “Top Gun” aviator was the third and final Tom Cruise character left standing.

Combat Classics Final: Gunnery Sgt. Hartman vs. Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore. Robert Duvall’s Kilgore edged Lee Marvin’s boss from “The Dirty Dozen” by a razor-thin margin in the last round, earning 50.22 percent of the vote. R. Lee Ermey’s performance in “Full Metal Jacket” has yet to be seriously challenged, posting easy wins over characters portrayed by an all-time Hollywood all-star team — Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart.

Best of the Rest Final: Capt. B.F. “Hawkeye” Pierce vs. Lord Darth Vader. A late run by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (“NCIS”) almost made this an all-TV affair, but the Sith lord managed to hold on. Just how popular are these two? Alan Alda’s Hawkeye starred in the highest-rated TV series episode in American history, while the Star Wars’ saga’s total box-office haul now sits at more than $3.7 billion.

Nobody’s safe in the Battle Bracket — no matter how many awards you’ve won, how many millions your movie made, or how good you are at beach volleyball.

Voting in the round of 16 of our Clash of Characters contest continues here through Friday afternoon, when the polls reset and eight entrants get the boot. Regardless of the outcomes, some of those departures will involve TV and/or movie icons. A look at four of the most heated contests, with vote totals as of Wednesday afternoon:

1. Captain First Rank Marko Ramius (52.15 percent) vs. Col. Nathan Jessep (47.85 percent). Sean Connery’s Soviet sub captain holds a small lead over Jack Nicholson’s Marine officer. If the colonel can’t rally, fans of “A Few Good Men” may be forced to shift allegiance to another film featuring Tom Cruise. Except …

2. Capt. John Miller (78.07 percent) vs. Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (21.93 percent). Tom Hanks’ schoolteacher from “Saving Private Ryan” has all but shut down the jet-flying heartthrob, but there is time for a Navy rally. If not, it’ll be a repeat of the quarterfinals from 2015’s Military Movie Madness, when “Top Gun” was turfed out by another World War II epic, “Patton.”

3. Maj. John Reisman (50.23 percent) vs. Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (49.77 percent).

After two days of voting, this matchup between Lee Marvin’s “Dirty Dozen” boss and Robert Duvall’s “Apocalypse Now” tour de force was split dead even on multiple occasions Wednesday afternoon. Whoever advances draws R. Lee Ermey’s Gunnery Sgt. Hartman for the regional crown.

4. Lord Darth Vader (54.54 percent) vs. Leroy Jethro Gibbs (45.46 percent).

Voters who questioned whether the ‘Star Wars’ villain belonged in the bracket may have a point — we’ve looked for Basic Allowance for Housing rates for Sith lords with and without dependents, and so far, nothing. That said, Harmon’s NCIS agent has Marine bona fides and has given Vader his toughest test so far in the tournament.

Stars of long-running television juggernauts. Firearm-wielding heroes battling British rule, invading aliens and all things in between. Hollywood icons who’ve brought their skills to bear in uniform — in courtrooms, in cockpits, even under the sea.

The grab bag of contestants remaining in the third round of Battle Bracket: Clash of Characters shows the depth and breadth of the full field, but only these 16 have a chance to claim the title of the greatest fictional military movie or TV character ever. A bit about each matchup is below; head here to cast your ballot and use the hastag #BattleBracket to campaign for your choice on social media.

John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone, Rambo series) vs. Staff Sgt. Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt, Fury): Rambo has demolished all comers in the first two rounds, while Wardaddy’s wins have come by thin margins, including a Round 2 victory over Chuck Norris’ character in “Delta Force” by only a handful of votes.

Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson, The Patriot) vs. Maj. Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Predator): Martin has removed both Jack Reacher and Steve “Captain America” Rogers from the bracket. Schaefer’s no joke: He took out Lt. Topper Harley (“Hot Shots!”) in Round 2 with nearly 85 percent of the vote.

Col. Nathan Jessep (Jack Nicholson, A Few Good Men) vs. Captain First Rank Marko Ramius (Sean Connery, The Hunt for Red October): Hollywood legends square off in roles from movies that also featured actors still attached to the bracket — Tom Cruise in “A Few Good Men,” James Earl Jones in “The Hunt for Red October.”

Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks, Saving Private Ryan) vs. Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise, Top Gun): Different eras, different services, similar star power — early Round 3 results have Maverick in a hole.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey, Full Metal Jacket) vs. Sgt. John Stryker (John Wayne, Sands of Iwo Jima): Neither icon has been challenged through the first two rounds, but if early vote totals are any indicator, Gunny Hartman is well on his way to repeating what “Full Metal Jacket” did to the field in 2015’s Military Movie Madness.

Maj. John Reisman (Lee Marvin, The Dirty Dozen) vs. Lt. Col.
March Madness might be less than a day old, but unlike that other bracket where you can only watch as your selections go down in flames, Military Times’ Clash of Characters lets you have your say on the outcome.

And as Round 2 nears the midway point (vote here; voting closes Monday), there are plenty of outcomes in doubt, including some familiar names who could fail to make the final 16. Five quick bracket facts in our search for the greatest fictional military movie or TV character ever, with vote totals as of Friday afternoon:

1. Captains crash? Steve Rogers and James T. Kirk have time to rally, but both have ground to make up: Captain America has less than a third of the vote in his battle with Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson, “The Patriot”) while Capt. Kirk has about 46 percent of the vote in his contest against another captain, “Hawkeye” Pierce.

2. Get serious. Charlie Sheen’s Lt. Topper Harley (“Hot Shots!”) is barely out of the starting block against Maj. Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Predator”), with below 20 percent of the vote total. Bill Murray’s John Winger (“Stripes”) has fared a bit better against Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall, “Apocalypse Now”), but still trails with about 35 percent of the vote.

<atype-video-jwplayer nostick="true" playlisturl="https://cdn.jwplayer.com/v2/playlists/fCzRqMW8?tags=5f8f60b5-2725-480b-a525-9bccd55a2c88" aspectratio="16 / 9" mute autostart="false"></atype-video-jwplayer>
Military Times launched its Clash of Characters Battle Bracket and asked attendees of AUSA Global Force in Huntsville, who their favorite on-screen military character is. (Daniel Woolfolk/Staff)

3. Landslide alerts.

It’s never too early for a comeback, but fans of Lt. Cmdr. Queeg and Chief Petty Officer Ryback — from the Oscar-nominated “The Caine Mutiny” and the not-quite-Oscar-nominated “Under Siege,” respectfully — best get clicking quickly. Both characters are on the wrong end of routs thanks to a pair of early tournament favorites, Gunnery Sgt. Hartman and John Rambo.

4. Style clash.

Sure, you might find basketball teams that play different systems in the NCAA tourney, but Battle Bracket is the go-to for contests that really go outside the box. Case in point: Darth Vader has about a 3-to-1 edge over Lt. Jordan O’Neill, portrayed by Demi Moore in “G.I. Jane.”

5. Star power.

If trends hold, the final four characters in the Big Names and Blockbusters region will have been portrayed by a casting agent’s dream team: Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery, Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks. Closest to slipping: Cruise’s Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (“Top Gun”), who is fending off a late surge from Lt. A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis, “Tears of the Sun”). And speaking of stars, Brad Pitt’s “Wardaddy” Collier (“Fury”) has the early edge over Maj. Scott McCoy (“Delta Force”), which could leave the bracket Chuck Norris-less.

Rambo’s marching on. Ellen Ripley’s going home.

Gunny Hartman has outlasted Gunny Highway. Gomer Pyle, we hardly knew ye. And forget what any sequel title might tell you — Jack Reacher can go back to where he came from.

The first round of Battle Bracket: Clash of Characters has claimed its victims, but 32 of your favorites are moving on as we select the greatest fictional military movie or television character ever. Head to militarytimes.com/battle-bracket to vote on all 16 Round 2 battles now, and spread the word for your favorites with the hashtag #BattleBracket.

A look at five key showdowns that could come down to the wire.

1. Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks, “Saving Private Ryan”) vs. Lt. Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise, “Forrest Gump”). It’s a battle of “Gump” co-stars, both of whom earned landslide wins in the first round with more than 90 percent of the vote.

Both men also starred in “Apollo 13,” with Hanks as Navy Capt. Jim Lovell and Sinise as Ken Mattingly, who would go on to become a rear admiral. The film also starred Kevin Bacon, just to get that game out of the way.

2. Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner, Star Trek series) vs. Capt. B.F. “Hawkeye” Pierce (Alan Alda, “MASH”). Television titans collide, with the winner reaching the round of 16. Aside from sharing TV fame, both characters were played by different actors on film than on the small screen — Chris Pine has taken over for Shatner in recent years, while Elliott Gould played Hawkeye in the 1970 “MASH” movie that predated the TV show.

3. Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale (Ernest Borgnine, “McHale’s Navy”) vs. Col. Robert Hogan (Bob Crane, “Hogan’s Heroes”). Survivors of a pair of classic TV showdowns, as McHale topped Sgt. Bilko in the first round and Hogan outlasted Gomer Pyle. Before your time? Both shows remain readily available, with “McHale’s Navy” on Hulu and “Hogan’s Heroes” airing regularly on MeTV. Hogan’s even in that network’s bracket challenge, facing off with Agent Maxwell Smart, who was played by Marine Corps veteran Don Adams.

4. Sgt. Oddball (Donald Sutherland, “Kelly’s Heroes”) vs. Sgt. John Stryker (John Wayne, “Sands of Iwo Jima”). It’s the traditional March Madness styles clash, with Sutherland’s spaced-out Oddball taking on an icon in a retelling of one of World War II’s iconic battles.

5. Capt. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, Avengers series) vs. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson, “The Patriot”). Both characters took out high-profile first-round opposition, with Rogers downing “Roadblock” (Dwayne Johnson, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”) and Martin spiking Jack Reacher.
