{"id":11651,"date":"2021-07-21T15:15:16","date_gmt":"2021-07-21T15:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/07\/21\/former-1st-cavalry-division-boss-cleared-by-internal-investigation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:38:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:38:59","slug":"former-1st-cavalry-division-boss-cleared-by-internal-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/07\/21\/former-1st-cavalry-division-boss-cleared-by-internal-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Former 1st Cavalry Division boss cleared by internal investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army announced Wednesday that the two-star general who was suspended from his duties as commander of 1st Cavalry Division at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/07\/01\/army-cid-special-agent-secretly-visited-haiti-for-murder-plot-charges-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Hood, Texas<\/a>, has been cleared by a yet to be released administrative investigation and is now moving to a new assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Broadwater was suspended by then-Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy in December, following the release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/12\/08\/fourteen-leaders-relieved-or-suspended-after-scathing-report-on-fort-hood-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Hood Independent Review Committee\u2019s report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee detailed an environment at Fort Hood that allowed sexual assault and harassment to proliferate, as well as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/03\/08\/army-cid-could-be-turned-over-to-civilians-but-opposition-lingers\/\" target=\"_blank\">overburdened CID detachment<\/a> filled with rookie special agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee was dispatched to Fort Hood in August 2020 following a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/07\/15\/dead-soldier-formerly-listed-as-awol-is-finally-taken-off-list-of-deserters\/\" target=\"_blank\">macabre deaths<\/a> there, including the murder of 3rd Cavalry Regiment trooper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/09\/10\/inaccurate-testimonies-prolonged-investigations-into-vanessa-guillens-death-officials-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spc. Vanessa Guillen<\/a> inside an armory, and the subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/06\/17\/missing-soldiers-regiment-forms-internal-investigation-into-sexual-harassment-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\">sexual harassment allegations<\/a> that her family brought forth after her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Broadwater has now been cleared and is \u201cnot pending any adverse action as a result of either the Fort Hood Independent Review or the Army Regulation 15-6 into the climate and culture of the 1st Cavalry Division,\u201d reads a statement issued by Army Headquarters at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broadwater will be reassigned as the deputy commander of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/02\/12\/army-resurrects-v-corps-after-seven-years-to-bolster-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\">V Corps at Fort Knox, Kentucky<\/a>, the statement said. Maj. Gen. John B. Richardson also assumed command of the 1st Cavalry Division this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials did not immediately return a request for comment concerning whether Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Kenny, who was suspended alongside Broadwater, has also been cleared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fourteen leaders in total were fired or suspended after the Fort Hood Independent Review completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The III Corps deputy commander, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/09\/01\/fort-hood-gets-new-acting-commander-army-orders-in-depth-investigation-into-the-chain-of-command\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. Gen. Scott L. Efflandt<\/a>, as well as the 3rd Cavalry Regiment commander and senior enlisted soldier, Col. Ralph Overland and Command Sgt. Maj. Bradley Knapp, were all relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Efflandt was left in charge of Fort Hood while the post\u2019s top officer, Lt. Gen. Pat White, had been deployed to Iraq for much of the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Names of the other leaders involved, and the outcomes of their suspensions, were not released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army said it plans to release the findings and recommendations of the investigation that cleared Broadwater when a final administrative review is complete, but no timeline was given.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maj.
