Take note below of a job fair at Fort Belvoir, Va., on June 5 sponsored by the U.S. Chamber Foundation\u2019s Hiring Our Heroes program, where information about a new fellowship program for military spouses in the hospitality industry will be available, among many other job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For starters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Through the Defense Department\u2019s Military OneSource <a href=\"https:\/\/myseco.militaryonesource.mil\/portal\/\" target=_blank>Spouse Education &amp; Career Opportunities<\/a> program, career coaches provide individual guidance to spouses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2018\/12\/06\/heres-how-the-mycaa-spouse-scholarship-program-is-helping-support-troop-lethality\/\" target=_blank>education<\/a> and careers, at no charge. Call 800-342-9647 to speak with a career coach between 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, or from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The SECO program has many other resources, including a resume builder toolkit, information about scholarships, and more.<\/li><li>For specific job openings, look to the <a href=\"https:\/\/msepjobs.militaryonesource.mil\/msep\/\" target=_blank>Military Spouse Employment Partnership <\/a>program, a partnership between the Defense Department and corporate and non-profit organizations that specifically want to hire military spouses. Currently there are 390 organizations participating that have hired more than 134,000 military spouses. The companies are vetted by DoD, and offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2019\/05\/28\/marine-spouses-can-now-apply-for-500-professional-licensing-reimbursement-after-pcs-moves\/\" target=_blank>portable jobs<\/a>.<\/li><li>Military installations\u2019 employment assistance programs are a local resource to help with job searches. Contact the office to find out what assistance is available.<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringourheroes.org\/military-spouses\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation\u2019s Hiring Our Heroes <\/a>program hosts hiring and networking events across the country for military spouses, held in partnership with the installation\u2019s family employment readiness office and DoD\u2019s Military Spouse Employment Partnership.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/bluestarfam.org\/for-mil-families\/careers-2\/\" target=_blank>Blue Star Families\u2019 Career Center<\/a> offers resources such as their Spouseforce, which helps connect military spouses, training partners and employers. They also provide a variety of networking opportunities, career coaching and some connections to specific training.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2019\/05\/08\/linkedin-expands-its-free-program-for-military-spouses-adding-coast-guard-caregivers-families-of-the-fallen\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LinkedIn-Day-Sept.-2017.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">LinkedIn expands its free program for military spouses &#8212; adding Coast Guard, caregivers, families of the fallen<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Free LinkedIn Premium program, which normally costs $30 a month, now also now covers spouses&#039; job loss, career change.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A number of private sector employers have efforts under way to specifically hire military spouses. Walmart\u2019s Military Spouse Career Connection is showing results \u2013 with about 6,000 military spouses hired since the program began nearly seven months ago. The program gives hiring preference to military spouses who seek employment with Walmart or Sam\u2019s Club. It also guarantees a job at a nearby store or club for all military spouses employed by the company who move to a different part of the country due to the military, and a number of spouses already have been able to transfer to another store under the program. Military spouses are working at every level and career path of the company, including pilots, truck drivers, logistics positions and positions within Walmart and Sam\u2019s Club stores, according to Walmart officials. To apply, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walmartcareerswithamission.com\/content\/people-experience\/military\/spouse-announcement.html\" target=_blank>https:\/\/www.walmartcareerswithamission.com\/content\/people-experience\/military\/spouse-announcement.html<\/a> Walmart has been a partner in DoD\u2019s Military Spouse Employment Partnership program since 2009, but their new spouse hiring preference program is an addition to the MSEP program.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the program will be helpful to mobile military spouses, it\u2019s helped the Tidmore family in a different way. Katie Tidmore, who was the first hire last December through Walmart\u2019s new program, is a customer service manager in Arab, Ala. Her husband left the Army recently after 10 years &#8212; four years as a reservist and six years on active duty, including two tours to Afghanistan. Even though he still has his civilian job, she said, her new job helped in his transition out of the Reserves. \u201cI feel like he had a lot of pressure lifted off of him. I feel like he didn\u2019t have to worry as much about certain finances when I got a job. He didn\u2019t feel like everything was on him anymore. It relieved a little bit of stress for him, and that\u2019s always good,\u201d said Tidmore, 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s had difficulty finding steady or consistent work before. \u201cBut it\u2019s not as much about finances to me as it is for someone to give me an opportunity to work and try to pursue a career professionally. It just means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walmart also just donated $1 million to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hireheroesusa.org\/helpingmilspouses\/\" target=_blank>Hire Heroes USA<\/a>, part of which will go to that nonprofit\u2019s Serving Spouses, a career coaching program tailored specifically for military spouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This summer, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsmai.org\/News\/PRDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=49874\" target=_blank>Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International Foundation<\/a> is launching a program that will eventually provide paid, six-week fellowships to unemployed military spouses in various parts of the country. The fellowships will be in the areas of sales, marketing, and revenue management positions. The first fellowships will be offered at two hotels in Washington, D.C., the Sofitel Lafayette Square and the Fairmont. HSMAI will offer the program through an application process, working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation\u2019s Hiring Our Heroes program.
