Department officials said the first call, expected within 90 days of separation from the military, will include an in-depth conversation with veterans about their goals and challenges, to better target what VA services may be of use to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/10\/09\/new-veteran-suicide-numbers-raise-concerns-among-experts-hoping-for-positive-news\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4018590.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New veteran suicide numbers raise concerns among experts hoping for positive news<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About 17 veterans a day die by suicide, a number that has stayed steady over a decade.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring subsequent calls, representatives will follow up with veterans to check on their transition,\u201d officials said about the new effort in a formal statement. \u201cIn those calls, the representatives will answer any questions the veterans may have about VA benefits and services, and connect them with valuable resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the programs the callers will discuss are the free mental health resources available through VA for all separating service members for their first year of post-military life, regardless of discharge status or service history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move follows other initiatives by the White House in recent years to improve outreach to veterans in the months following their departure from the military, which researchers have said are among the most dangerous for individuals battling mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 20 veterans and active-duty service members die by suicide each day, according to the latest figures from the VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Heather O\u2019Beirne Kelly, director of military and veterans health policy at the American Psychological Association, called the new program an important step in helping veterans because it takes a proactive approach in looking for individuals who may be in distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe suicide rate among veterans the first year after transition to civilian status is particularly high and cuts across all demographic groups and service cohorts,\u201d she said. \u201cRisk is often elevated during times of intense change, and it\u2019s important for VA to reach out instead of waiting for a veteran to make the first contact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is not mandatory, and calls from VA are dependent on veterans providing the department or military officials with their current contact information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelly said APA would like to see mandatory mental health screening for all departing service members to help better identify individuals who would benefit from other outreach programs in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But she said the calls from the Solid Start program \u201cwill be crucial, since those check-ins will come when adjustment to civilian life is far more salient and perhaps challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information on the program is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/benefits\/solid-start.asp\" target=_blank>the VA web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer.
