Called &#8220;Xisha&#8221; in Chinese, the islands have been incorporated into the southern province of Hainan and are being developed for tourism, as well as being equipped with weapon systems meant to enforce China&#8217;s claim to virtually the entire South China Sea.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident over the weekend comes at a time of mounting tensions between the two nations. The Pentagon officially uninvited China from this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/23\/china-was-just-uninvited-from-rimpac-heres-why\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Rim of the Pacific<\/a> naval exercise last week, citing the country\u2019s \u201ccontinued militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/naval\/2018\/05\/04\/how-far-can-chinas-long-range-missiles-reach-in-the-south-china-sea\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">How far can China\u2019s long-range missiles reach in the South China Sea?<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese air force announced two months ago that it had landed long-range <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/training-sim\/2018\/03\/29\/china-shows-off-long-range-bombers-in-air-force-drill\/\" title=\"\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover41485\">H-6K bombers<\/a> on islands in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That announcement came not long after China deployed advanced <a
