{"id":12692,"date":"2017-09-12T16:33:22","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T16:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smg.go-vip.net\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/09\/12\/us-air-force-approves-use-of-magpuls-signature-polymer-magazine\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:26:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:26:25","slug":"us-air-force-approves-use-of-magpuls-signature-polymer-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2017\/09\/12\/us-air-force-approves-use-of-magpuls-signature-polymer-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force approves use of Magpul\u2019s signature polymer magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force has approved the use of Magpul Industries\u2019 signature polymer magazine known as the PMag GenM3, according to Vicki Stein, a spokeswoman for the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Units are authorized to purchase the black and coyote tan polymer magazine through existing Defense Logistics Agency contracts, Stein told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps approved the use of the same magazine earlier this year after extensive testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Magpul GenM3 PMag was the only magazine to perform to acceptable levels across all combinations of Marine Corps 5.56mm rifles and ammunition during testing,\u201d Barbara Hamby, a spokesperson for Marine Corps Systems Command, told Military Times back in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2017\/01\/08\/marines-approve-magpul-s-signature-polymer-ammunition-magazine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/magpul.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines approve Magpul&#8217;s signature polymer ammunition magazine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Marine Corps has approved Magpul Industries Corp.&#039;s signature polymer ammunition magazine for use in combat and training, according to a Magpul press release. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force arrived at its decision after analyzing the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center\u2019s testing of commercial magazines, Stein said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen pursuing any capability-based requirement, and before conducting any tests, the Air Force will first work closely with our joint partners to see if they have conducted any testing,\u201d Stein said, explaining the process the Air Force followed to approve the new magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is also authorized to use the Army\u2019s Enhanced Performance Magazine, or EPM, Stein added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That stands in contrast to the Marine Corps\u2019 decision to approve only the Magpul magazine, which was the only commercial magazine to pass Marine Corps testing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army began fielding the EPM back in 2016 when it was supplied to the Army\u2019s 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, according to an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/177640\/army_fielding_new_magazine_optimized_for_m4m4a1_carbine_and_m855a1\">press release.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cArmy engineers and scientists optimized the EPM to work with the M4\/M4A1, M16 rifle, and standard military 5.56mm small-arms round, the M855A1,\u201d according to the Army press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The polymer magazines have been popular with troops in the field for years. Mark Milley about why the service does not allow polymer ammunition magazines during training or in combat.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bans have since been lifted, but only the Marine Corps and now the Air Force have officially approved the polymer magazine, while phasing out the old aluminum magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe legacy magazine(s) will be eliminated through attrition and turned in when no longer serviceable, in accordance with local turn-in procedures,\u201d Stein told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, five senators \u2014 including three veterans, led by Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst \u2014&nbsp;submitted a letter to Army Chief of Staff Gen.
