It had raised more than $26,000 in about a year thanks to a simple formula: Brewers pledge to craft a black ale and donate the proceeds to a local veteran-friendly cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo this day, no one has ever said to me, \u2019I don\u2019t want to help a veteran,\u201d said Pappas, a non-combat Persian Gulf War veteran. \u201cWhether they have the bandwidth to participate in the program or not, they\u2019ve been totally on board with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By day, Pappas co-owns a human resources business in Boston, and has done so for the better part of two decades. But in 2014 he launched a side project \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beer-journal.com\/\">Beer-Journal.com<\/a>, a craft-beer blog that chronicled his trips around New England to sample whatever was on tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That served as his introduction to the regional brewing community. A few years later, he would put the blog on the back burner and push the Black Ale Project for what turned out to be a very welcoming group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe craft beer community is a bunch of great folks,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re concerned about their fellow men, and women, in general. I knew that I could go to them to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medusabrewing.com\/\">Medusa Brewing Company<\/a> in Hudson, Massachusetts, put out the first black ale in September 2016. <a href=\"http:\/\/wormtownbrewery.com\/\">Wormtown Brewery<\/a> in Worcester followed suit a month later. The setup allows each brewer to produce their own recipe; more than a dozen have already sold out of their product and reported their donations to Pappas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money, though, stays local. Sometimes it\u2019s earmarked for local chapters of national nonprofits like Fisher House or Disabled American Veterans; other times it\u2019s a regional cause, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/nechv.org\/\">New England Center and Home for Veterans<\/a>. In one case, it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdislander.com\/maine-news\/beer-support-coast-guard-unit\">the local Coast Guard unit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.14thstarbrewing.com\/\">14th Star Brewing Company<\/a> out of Vermont put its black ale proceeds toward <a href=\"https:\/\/purpleheartsreunited.org\/\">Purple Hearts Reunited<\/a>, a nonprofit founded by Vermont Army National Guard Capt. Zachariah Fike. Fike\u2019s work to get missing medals back into the right hands was part of the reason Army Times named him its <a href=\"http:\/\/smoy.militarytimes.com\/winner\/2016\/army\">Soldier of the Year for 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s far from the brewery\u2019s only military connection: Founder Steve Gagner came up with the business plan with a fellow soldier while deployed to Afghanistan; he\u2019s now a major in the Vermont Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the project brew itself was unmistakably veteran-friendly, dubbed BCG Black Ale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"432\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIL-BLACK-ALE-P3-101617.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIL-BLACK-ALE-P3-101617.png.png 432w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIL-BLACK-ALE-P3-101617.png.png?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIL-BLACK-ALE-P3-101617.png.png?resize=300,300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Promotional material for 14th Star Brewing Company&#8217;s BCG Black IPA. (Courtesy of 14th Star Brewing Company)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t put it out there, what the actual naming of it meant,\u201d said Andrea Gagner, the founder\u2019s sister and the brewery\u2019s CEO, \u201cbut the promotional materials definitely had a visual that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/01\/27\/145983999\/military-drops-birth-control-glasses-for-fresher-pair\">any service member could get the meaning from<\/a>. &#8230; <span>I think we sold out of it in less than a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifteen breweries were preparing to brew or release Black Ale Project product as of early October. The small batches make it difficult for Pappas to promote individual brews (like BCG, they can sell out fast), but he maintains lists of the participants, and the charities, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackaleproject.org\/breweries\/\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m actually at the point now where breweries are coming to me,
