Visiting with sailors at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington state, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis didn\u2019t mince words when discussing the differences between serving in the military and the civilian population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mattis told sailors they would experience the best and worst life has to offer while in the Navy, a sign they are living life to the fullest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat means you\u2019re not some p—y sitting on the sidelines,\u201d Mattis told the sailors Wednesday, according to a Pentagon transcript of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Military service will help ensure sailors are \u201dnot going to be laying on a shrink\u2019s couch when you\u2019re 45 years old, say \u2019what the hell did I do with my life?\u2019\u201d Mattis said, according to the transcript. \u201dWhy? Because you served others; you served something bigger than you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mattis took questions regarding U.S. nuclear deterrence, the nuclear triad and whether America\u2019s place in the world should continue at the post-World War II level of engagement or recede to a more isolationist stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While extolling the virtues of military service, Mattis told the sailors he wasn\u2019t there to give them a re-enlistment pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
