{"id":15451,"date":"2021-02-09T21:34:20","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T21:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/09\/us-army-begins-equipping-first-unit-with-hypersonic-capability\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:35:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:35:06","slug":"us-army-begins-equipping-first-unit-with-hypersonic-capability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/02\/09\/us-army-begins-equipping-first-unit-with-hypersonic-capability\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army begins equipping first unit with hypersonic capability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014The U.S. Army expects to deliver \u2014 in a little more than 200 days from start to finish \u2014 the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2020\/08\/05\/heres-how-the-dod-plans-to-meet-its-ambitious-hypersonic-missile-test-schedule\/\">hypersonic weapon capability<\/a> to a unit, a service official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has sent that unit the equipment it needs to prepare for a rigorous training program, according to Lt. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood, director of the Army\u2019s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army has worked with industry to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/14\/how-the-us-army-is-building-a-hypersonic-weapons-business\/\" target=_blank>build the hypersonic weapon glide body industrial base<\/a>, it has also separately produced launchers, trucks, trailers and the battle operation center needed to put together <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/06\/05\/coming-soon-to-the-us-army-combat-capable-hypersonic-and-laser-weapons\/\" target=_blank>a ground-launched hypersonic weapon battery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy the end of this fiscal year, which is in September, all of the equipment that the unit needs plus training will be delivered to the unit,\u201d Thurgood told Defense News in a Feb. 8 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/08\/30\/heres-who-will-build-and-integrate-the-first-hypersonic-weapon-system-prototype\/\" target=_blank>Lockheed Martin is the weapon system integrator<\/a> for the Army\u2019s hypersonic capability that will be launched from a mobile truck. Dynetics was chosen to build the hypersonic glide body for the missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thurgood declined to identify the unit chosen to accept the first hypersonic battery. He noted that the company, battalion and brigade commanders have all been selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only element that won\u2019t be delivered to the unit until fiscal 2023 is a live round. However, on March 8, Thurgood said he will personally deliver the first two training canisters for the unit to use for end-to-end kill chain training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once that unit has the necessary equipment, it will begin training in October to prepare for the first joint flight campaign test that\u2019s scheduled with the Navy for the first quarter of FY22, Thurgood said. The unit will also prepare for subsequent tests in the fourth quarter of FY22 and the second quarter of FY23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit will not participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/army-modernization\/2020\/03\/20\/pentagons-major-hypersonic-glide-body-flight-test-deemed-success\/\" target=_blank>hypersonic flight test<\/a> scheduled for the third quarter of FY21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thurgood would not detail the upcoming test profiles because they are classified. However, the first test of the Common-Hypersonic Glide Body, or C-HGB, took place in March 2020 when a missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/13\/us-developed-hypersonic-missile-hit-within-six-inches-of-target-army-secretary-reports\/\" target=_blank>hit its target within 6 inches,<\/a> then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual conference in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hypersonic weapons are capable of flying faster than Mach 5 \u2014 beyond the speed of sound \u2014 and can maneuver between varying altitudes and azimuths, making it difficult to detect. The C-HGB is made up of the weapon\u2019s warhead, guidance system, cabling and thermal protection shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. is in a race to field hypersonic weapon capability as well as develop systems to defend against hypersonic missiles as both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2020\/06\/09\/is-china-already-inside-americas-hypersonic-industrial-base\/\" target=_blank>China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/10\/07\/russia-reports-successful-test-launch-of-hypersonic-missile\/\" target=_blank>Russia are actively developing and testing their respective hypersonic weapons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Dynetics is preparing to build the first hypersonic glide bodies at its facility in Huntsville, Alabama, after learning how to do so from the federally funded Sandia National Laboratories. These glide bodies will be the first ever produced within the U.S. industrial base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe transition is going well,\u201d Thurgood said. Dynetics has spent almost 18 months at Sandia learning how to build the glide body and also taking a crack at building it by itself at the laboratory, with Sandia looking on and offering guidance where necessary. Sandia representatives will be at the Dynetics\u2019 facility when the glide body building begins to continue looking over the shoulders of those performing the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTransitioning production technology is not as easy as people might perceive it to be,\u201d Thurgood said. \u201cProduction, especially high-end production, is part engineering and part art; and so the engineering piece you can learn through drawings and those kind of things, but the art of it is always the hardest part, so that\u2019s why we chose an in-person, face-to-face, leader-follower [strategy] \u2014 that institutional knowledge that everybody has in every profession that\u2019s never written down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other challenge in building the industrial base, Thurgood noted, is creating an entire supply chain, and not just focusing on the top tier, like Dynetics. This kind of work has required an almost daily focus on how the pieces are coming together, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the pressure to move quickly to build glide bodies is demanding, given the rigorous test schedule ahead. Building a new industrial base for hypersonic missiles would be difficult in a normal world, but having to do so under pandemic restrictions has been even more challenging, Thurgood said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one positive, he added, is that the companies involved are \u201cinnovative\u201d in terms of what can be done from home such as working on drawings, which would have traditionally been done at a facility. Where touch labor is necessary, workers are spacing themselves out accordingly, wearing protective equipment and adjusting shifts, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, some smaller companies are challenged; we\u2019re watching that every day,\u201d Thurgood said. \u201cYou know, it might have been a week delay here, we make it up by shifting process around, shifting
