Both years represented the highest number of active duty deaths since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that launched the Global War on Terrorism era, raising concerns that the pattern of increased deaths has not receded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army was the only service whose active duty troops saw an increase in suicides from 2020 to 2021, and its rate of deaths \u2014 36.18 deaths per 100,000 troops \u2014 is its highest since 1938 and higher than any other active duty branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/04\/01\/army-suicides-hit-new-post-911-peak-in-2021\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6829847.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army suicides hit new post-9\/11 peak in 2021<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The active duty Army&#039;s suicide rate is at its highest since the Great Depression.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuicide is a complex phenomenon, with numerous factors and environmental conditions that contribute to increased depression and other behavioral issues that influence an individual\u2019s decision to harm themselves,\u201d acknowledged Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Gabe Ramirez in a statement to Army Times. \u201cThe Army is developing policies to ensure the consistent implementation of the Army Suicide Prevention program across the force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramirez outlined a series of key recent and ongoing initiatives intended to address the issue. But critics who think the service needs to <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/army-subreddit-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\">improve its suicide prevention initiatives<\/a> point to broken links, disabled hotlines, and difficulty tracking down intervention points of contact when individuals express suicidal intentions online. Overall, critics are concerned that big ideas need to be executed better on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key portion of the effort to overhaul the Army\u2019s suicide prevention efforts will be the publication of long-awaited new doctrine governing the program. Ramirez said it will publish sometime between July and September of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s suicide intervention training curriculum \u2014 Ask, Care, Escort \u2014 also was recently updated, Ramirez added. The material was developed in coordination between the Army G-1, the Army Public Health Center and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has also recently introduced new guides and toolkits for leaders to monitor and respond to potential behavioral health issues in their formations, such as data dashboards that allow commanders to survey<a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/253282\/army_introduces_behavioral_health_pulse_tool_to_help_leaders\" target=\"_blank\"> mental health in their units<\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/armypubs.army.mil\/epubs\/DR_pubs\/DR_a\/ARN32320-ARMY_DIR_2021-10-000-WEB-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">evaluate risk for individual soldiers<\/a>. New Army medicine guidance also directs healthcare providers to alert commanders when a soldier is deemed to be at \u201chigh risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramirez detailed other nascent efforts meant to complement the prevention work, including a pilot program intended to find ways for the service\u2019s chaplains to \u201ccomplement\u201d behavioral heath care, ongoing efforts to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/01\/03\/the-armys-holistic-health-and-fitness-program-keys-to-new-years-resolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\">holistic health and fitness<\/a> across the force and the addition of financial literacy to NCO academy curriculums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army vice chief of staff, Gen. Joseph Martin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/252334\/army_implements_new_suicide_prevention_initiative\" target=\"_blank\">led a training session in November<\/a> through the \u201cchain-teach\u201d method of passing in-person briefings down the chain of command, Ramirez said. Martin\u2019s training focused on communicating about the new resources and systems available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramirez also indicated that the service is working to determine the impact of Martin\u2019s training, which the active duty force was scheduled to complete March 1. The Army Reserve and Guard have until Sept. 1 to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will the suicide prevention efforts work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not yet clear how effective the Army\u2019s overhaul of suicide prevention will be, and much of a soldier\u2019s mental health is dependent on their experience of daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military life comes with a unique set of stressors that goes beyond combat stress and its aftermath \u2014 high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/22\/armor-brigade-workload-may-dramatically-increase-if-ukraine-crisis-holds\/\" target=\"_blank\">operational tempo<\/a>, PCS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2021\/07\/22\/army-to-soldiers-suffering-from-pcs-woes-get-help-from-your-chain-of-command\/\" target=\"_blank\">moves<\/a>, leadership issues and more can adversely affect mental health. Much of the implementation of the Army\u2019s suicide prevention program will fall to lower-level commanders and leaders, who have a great deal of influence over their subordinates\u2019 daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior leaders have previously said they think a fundamental step for reducing tricky \u201charmful behaviors\u201d like suicide, sexual assault and more across the force begins with identifying and selecting better leaders over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said in a February roundtable at the Center for a New American Security that the Army\u2019s challenge is \u201ccreat[ing] a positive command climate at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s top leader cautioned, though, that changing a culture takes time. And while the service\u2019s efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/10\/13\/army-bets-on-data-as-it-sets-stage-for-talent-management-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\">better assess and select leaders<\/a> are well underway, their results won\u2019t be immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not going to create a
