{"id":16195,"date":"2019-02-20T22:57:01","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T22:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/20\/army-to-test-a-new-lighter-body-armor-vest-and-full-system-this-year\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:43:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:43:29","slug":"army-to-test-a-new-lighter-body-armor-vest-and-full-system-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2019\/02\/20\/army-to-test-a-new-lighter-body-armor-vest-and-full-system-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Army to test a new, lighter body armor vest and full system this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later this year the Army will test a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/01\/new-in-2018-army-to-issue-new-body-armor-to-soldiers\/\" target=\"_blank\">lighter-weight body armor vest<\/a> as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/10\/31\/the-marine-corps-is-buying-new-body-armor-as-it-works-to-upgrade-the-fit-feel-and-protection-of-vital-gear\/\" target=\"_blank\">head-to-toe soldier protection system<\/a> program and conduct a full test of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/04\/16\/deploying-soldiers-could-see-lighter-body-armor-by-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\">entire system by this fall<\/a> as they prep the new gear for deploying units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And soldiers will get new eye protection that includes a transitioning lens for sunglasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s according to the recently released annual report from the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation for the Defense Department. It provides a detailed overview of Army, Navy and Air Force programs. Equipment includes Torso and Extremity Protection, Army Combat Shirt with built-in elbow pads, yoke, and shoulder protection, Integrated Head Protection System (IHPS), and transition combat eye protection (TCEP) (Alan Lessig\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Integrated Helmet Protection System gives rifle-level protection; past versions could only promise handgun-level safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medium-sized helmet weighs about 3 pounds, cutting about 2 percent of the weight from the previous version but adding 15 percent more protection. The IHPS also has an additional applique layer that can give soldiers even greater protection, though it does add another 2 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, PEO Soldier commander Brig. Gen. Anthony Potts told Army Times that research was being conducted with a new material that is harder and lighter. If successful, that material could offer soldiers the enhanced IHPS, with applique protection, at a weight of 3 pounds instead of the 5 pounds it weighs now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Potts also gave updates to the vest work. A team of contributors from his office, the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Special Operations Command and the Marine Corps found ways to make new design changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That resulted in changes that provided more mobility, lessened weight but did not reduce protection from the Modular Scalable Vest 2.0 version that has been developed as part of the total Solder Protection System, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new redesign was run through a vast classified database of shot patterns and body armor hits that\u2019s maintained by PEO Soldier.
