Originally referred to as \u201cVint Hill,\u201d FOIA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsa.gov\/Portals\/70\/documents\/news-features\/declassified-documents\/crypto-almanac-50th\/Vint_Hill_Farms_Station.pdf\" target=_blank>records from NSA show<\/a> that it had several owners before it was purchased by the Army in 1942.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Situated in convenient proximity to the Signal Intelligence Service headquarters in Arlington, but still located far enough from the city to remain secretive, Vint Hill proved the perfect place for the Army to house a spy base: Monitoring Station No. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The geography was the key. Evidently, its \u201clocation and quiet electromagnetic geology\u201d made it a prime spot for intercepting radio signals abroad, reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/travel\/cold-war-museum-winery-virginia-180962428\/\" target=_blank>Smithsonian Magazine<\/a>. And during World War II, soldiers stationed there did just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrivate Leonard A. Mudloff intercepted a message from the Japanese ambassador to Germany in 1943 that described German fortifications, troop strength and contingency plans in western France,\u201d the Fauquier Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fauquier.com\/news\/marking-the-history-at-vint-hill\/article_1d0c3658-af13-11e8-a3e6-cf1caeb3ea2d.html\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cOnce decoded, that information aided the Allies in planning the successful D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the documents released by the NSA, the station was a crucial intelligence-gathering mechanism throughout World War II and beyond. Additional Army resources <a href=\"https:\/\/history.army.mil\/html\/books\/070\/70-43\/CMH_Pub_70-43.pdf\" target=_blank>classified <\/a>Vint Hill Farms Station at one point as one of the largest intercept facilities in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVint Hill was one of the country\u2019s most important intelligence gathering assets as well as a signal school, signal training center, and refitting station for selected signal units returning from combat prior to further overseas deployment,\u201d the unclassified NSA material reads. \u201cThere was a major expansion in military construction, particularly quarters, during and following the Korean conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It became a major intelligence hub during the Cold War as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter World War II, the base handled much of the reconnaissance and espionage that played a role in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/middleburglife.com\/barn-turned-spy-station-turned-winery\/\" target=_blank>Middleburg Life<\/a>, a local Virginia magazine. \u201cDuring the Vietnam War, the barns were used in 1972 for training cryptoanalysts, radio intercept operators and people who repaired equipment. In 1973 the base\u2019s focus switched to research and development.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper also noted that during the Cold War, Vint Hill Farms Station &#8220;was referred to as \u2018Washington\u2019s giant ear\u2019 playing a critical role, first as a secret listening post and later as a center for the development of sophisticated equipment designed to intercept enemy transmissions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vint Hill remained in the Army family until the Base Realignment and Closure Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsim.army.mil\/brac\/sites.html?state=VA?brac=1993?site=VA_VintHillFarms_1993\" target=_blank>recommended <\/a>it be shut down in 1993, with the full closure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usace.army.mil\/Portals\/2\/docs\/history\/BRAC_History-Text.pdf\" target=_blank>taking place<\/a> at the end of September 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1999, the land was sold to the Vint Hill Economic Development Authority and designated for commercial use, though the main barn where the Army operated remained. A winery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fauquier.com\/living29\/wine-down-the-enigma-of-winemaking-deciphered-at-vint-hill\/article_d04134f0-14f8-11e7-bda5-c3628318161a.html\" target=\"_blank\">opened <\/a>in 2009, with a Cold War museum following 2011. The museum was co-founded by Francis Gary Powers, Jr. , son of the U-2 pilot shot down and captured by Soviets in 1960, according to Smithsonian Magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vint Hill\u2019s Managing Partner Chris Pearmond said the site now holds significant value for members of the community in Fauquier as veterans and civilians who worked at Monitoring Station No. 1 stop by the winery every now and again. However, he added, they still maintain a certain level of secrecy about their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s amazing how many people come here and say \u2018you know, I would like to tell you what I did here 40 years ago,\u2019&#8221; Pearmond told WUSA 9. \u201cIt\u2019s great because I ask them \u2018what did you do here 40 years ago?\u2019 And they say, \u2018did I say I was here 40 years ago?\u2019 I say \u2018if you were here, could you talk about it?\u2019 They say \u2018no, but I\u2019ll have a glass of Chardonnay,
